Hot Wheels Apptivity Review

Mattel have found a brilliant way of combining one of their iconic toys with the ever increasingly popular iPad.  As soon as we received this to review, I knew it would appeal to my two sons; both of whom love the iPad.

This is more than an app, it combines a small hand held toy; in this case a Hot Wheels car which interacts with an app on the iPad and it gives a new dimension to playing games using this device.

It is very simple to use.  My eight year old, who is no stranger to games and electronic gadgets, had it out of the packaging and was playing on it before I had even asked him if he wanted a go.

When you buy the Apptivity, it comes with the vehicle and a code to download the necessary app to your iPad.  There is no extra cost to download the app.  Once downloaded, you place the car onto the iPad screen and you are ready to race.  The car comes with a button underneath to enable the iPad to detect its presence, but it is perfectly safe and will not scratch or damage the screen.

Our car was called ‘Power Rev’, there are four different cars in the series and each one has different abilities.  As soon as you connect with the iPad, you are off on a race track which takes you over different terrains.  There are three hangars to search for and within each hangar lies three different activities; jump, race and search and destroy.  You can also collect coins as you play which can be spent in the Workshop on upgrades and power-ups.

From my point of view, it was simple to use and both R and L settled into using it easily and they really enjoyed the games and the different things they could do with the cars.  It is a really great way of combining a well known toy with an app and the boys certainly found it entertaining and engaging.

There are other Apptivity toys to choose from too; Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Fruit Ninja, Batman, WWE Rumblers and Apptivity Monkey are also available and the RRP is £11.99.  Find out more on the Apptivity website.

I will leave you with R who wanted to show you first hand what the app was like.

We were sent the Hot Wheels Apptivity for the purpose of this review, all opinions are our own.
