The early onset of Christmas

September 18, 2013 in Family Life, Life

The kids are all back at school, the nights are drawing in, we are all twitching as we pass by the heating thermostat as we pull on our cardies and brace the autumn winds and rain and out there in the distance there is a faint rustle of wrapping paper and you can just start to hear the gentle sounds of Jingle Bells in the air. In the supermarkets, nestled at the end of the Halloween goodies, there are the first definite signs that it is on the way and those lovely large tins of sweets are all on special offer.  On the television, there seem to be even more toy commercials crammed in to each advert break and yesterday our first (of many) toy catalogues popped onto the door mat.

Online there is a flurry of glitter and tissue paper with those that are lucky enough to be able to create all things festive, dusting off their tinsel and jam jars with great glee.
Yes, folks Christmas is most definitely on the way.

The countdown is on.

Now I am not a huge fan of the early onset of Christmas.  By my very nature, I am Mrs Last Minute Dot Com.  That is how I roll in most aspects of my life and Christmas is no different.  This year however, things are going to change.  I fully intend on embracing my inner Christmas fairy and grabbing Christmas by it’s shiny ho ho hos and getting myself organised, prepared and not having the last minute panic that usually hits on the November payday.

I have bought some presents.  Yes actual presents.  For Christmas.  I can tell that you are impressed.  This week, I am going to purchase one of the first big presents for one of my children too.  Now for some, this is no big news.  I know that some people do all of their Christmas shopping in the January sales.  Sadly, I am not, nor will I ever be one of those people.  One year I did buy some Christmas cards and wrapping paper in the sales which I was very smug about, until the middle of the following year, when I discovered them at the back of the wardrobe; forgotten about and unused.
So my plan is to drip feed presents into the house, so that the only thing that I will have to worry about mid December will be those little extras and who knows, we may even have some money left in January too which will make a very nice change.
Does that mean that next year I will be doing all of my Christmas shopping in the sales?  Probably not. That just wouldn’t be me.

Good for you! I know it makes sense and I genuinely intend to be more organised than I was last year, but I still can’t be quite as organise as doing stuff in September or October!

I used to collect presents over the year so everything was done by November (or end October) and I never had to go into shops when it was busy. This year I have absolutely no budget so I think I’ll just ignore Christmas!

One thing I always got wrong though was forgetting what I bought over the year. So when it came to wrapping I’d look at the pile and end up saving stuff for birthdays too as there was too much. Oops. After a few years of over-buying I think a minimal Christmas will do us good 😉
