Now you’re four…

December 9, 2013 in

My baby is four.  That is good for her, but not so good for me.  It only seems like five minutes ago that I was sitting in the hospital bed introducing A to her brothers.  A girl.  A pink one after lots of blues.  We soon adapted and now she is most definitely Queen Bee.  The one who will not be ignored.

Four years.  How did that happen?  Four means that she is now officially a proper little girl.  She will go to school when she is four.  She will develop and grow into even more of an independent little soul.  She will probably grow a bit bossier too.
So now that your are four my gorgeous little girl, I am thinking that maybe you are now big enough to sleep in your own bed for the whole night.  Yes, I know that you always start in there, but somehow, I always seem to wake up at some point during the night with your toenails up my nostrils or one of your toys on my head and quite frankly after more years than I can remember of sharing a bed with one of my children, I think the time has come to reclaim it.
And while we are on the subject of sleeping, this whole sleeping with several toys and dragging them up and down stairs and in and our of bed is starting to get a bit ridiculous and if you are going to sleep with toys, why not make them the smaller ones so that there is some actual room in your bed for you.
Another thing is the whole pink thing.  Yes, yes I know that after three boys, I did embrace the pinkness of having a girl with great gusto, but it all has gone a bit far now and your obsession is getting a little out of hand.  It is okay to wear something that is blue; blue is not just for boys.  In fact, there are a whole range of other very nice colours in the spectrum that can look nice on little girls.  Let’s go mad and try them all.
Now that you’re four, I really think the squeaking needs to stop.  I’m not really sure why it ever started. I’m sure that the neighbours must think that we own a giant mouse.  I know that it is a sign that you are tired, but I am not an expert at understanding ‘mouse’, nor do I want to.  So now that you are four, let’s try the whole ‘big girl conversation’ and you will probably find that you will get what you want a lot more often and mummy won’t get so cross.
We also need to have a chat about what being four actually means.  Yes, I did say that you start school when you are four. But, I didn’t mean on the day of your fourth birthday.  Telling the ladies at playgroup that you are leaving tomorrow is not a good idea as you are actually there for a few more months.  Okay, I may have mislead you a little there, but it wasn’t intentional.  The same applies to taking the stabilisers off your bike, we will do it in the new year, but not as soon as you wake up on your birthday.
Now whilst being four does technically mean that you are a big girl, however that does not mean that you can plaster yourself with make up.  Yes mummy does wear make up.  Trust me, mummy needs it. You do not.  Yes I know that when you go to granny’s house, she does let you play with her make up brushes and make up, however, you come home looking like an alien and it is not a good look.  So let’s leave the make up for another ten years or so shall we?
But I am liking the new ‘now I’m four..’ attitude that you have going on.  Eating your meals like a big four year old is a great improvement on the picking at them and moaning that we had whilst you were three.  I also like the fact that being four means that you are willing to take yourself to the toilet and I don’t have to drop everything and run every time you need to pee.
Whatever else this fourth year brings, I have no doubt that it will bring a lot of fun and laughter with a few tantrums along the way and the most important thing is that you enjoy it and carry on being you as you are truly amazing.

Ahh Miss A sounds fantastic, although I wouldn’t be too comfy either with all the toys joining us in bed on a nightly basis. I hope she has a wonderful day today and playgroup are happy to take her even though she’s declared she’s left 😉

We too have too many soft toys involved at bedtime! You may have a few years of it ye tho- the ten year old has only just stopped insisting on taking them all when we go away for the night! She is so gorgeous- have a lovely birthday day xxx

Happy birthday A! What a lovely post and here’s to mummy reclaiming the bed!
I’m afraid my 10 year old won’t ditch the toys in his bed – I literally have no idea how he fits in there! My daughter has just decided to ditch hers at 7 and she also dropped the pink as she turned 7, which was quite sad.
