Life in lockdown – the new normal

March 27, 2020 in Parenting

Well, what a strange time it is at the moment?

Surreal is a word that I am using a lot at the moment.  Everything is surreal.  There have been times this week that I have been sat out in the garden with the sun on my face and it feels like we are on holiday.  Except we are not.

The nice weather has probably helped us all this week as we all start to adjust to our somewhat changed lives. If it was wet and dreary, maybe things would feel a lot harder.

I am self-isolating as I come into one of the high risk categories and although I am pretty much staying in the house (or garden), I am going out for one daily dog walk just to get some fresh air and exercise.

The kids are all coping really well.  I am quite surprised.  It is hardest for the older teen.  He was working hard for his GCSEs and then nothing.  All exams cancelled.  I feel for the Year 11s and 13s, it has been a real slog for them and then nothing for a lot of them. The teen is still being set work from school but he is struggling to get motivated to do it and to be honest, I can see why.

The younger teen has surprised me, I really expected him to go into hibernation.  His favourite position is in his bed on one of his many devices but he has been getting up every day and doing exercise videos with his brother and taking the dog out for a walk.  As he is in Year 10, school work has been coming in thick and fast but we are making slow progress with that. He never was one for homework at the best of times.

My daughter is stuck with me as her teacher for the foreseeable future.  She was upset at the weekend, it is all very scary and confusing and she loves school, really loves it. After a week  of homeschooling, I have to say that I have a newfound admiration for both parents who homeschool and for primary teachers, I am exhausted.

Overall, the mood in the house is quite positive.  I am trying not to talk too much about the virus apart from warning the boys to social distance.  In many ways, it is harder for the kids as they might moan about school but they love it really, especially the social interaction with their friends.

We have all been doing the Joe Wicks PE workouts every day.  Not together I hasten to add.  My daughter and I do it first thing and then the boys do it when they finally get themselves out of bed.  I have to say I am enjoying them more than I thought I would.  Who knows, I might be fitter after this lockdown than I was before?

On the positive side, I am enjoying us all being together as a family. That may have worn off after a few weeks but we are all muddling along together and making the best of things.  I am just hoping that we all stay well and sane.

It is a strange time, but it sounds like you are all coping really well. I’m pleasantly surprised at how well we are coping here too.
