Finding time to relax is a challenge in the modern world. We live our lives at full speed, never really taking any time out to be by ourselves, enjoy our own company, and learn about ourselves. And it’s leading to an epidemic of burnout.
The trick here is to permit yourself to unwind. Relaxation isn’t just something that happens when you finish work. It requires conscious planning and application. It’s something you do.
So how do you relax and be happy if you work fifty hours per week or more? Let’s take a look.
Schedule “Me Time”
The first step is to schedule “me time.” Relaxation is an indulgence because it is all about you. For once, you’re not thinking about how you need to meet the needs of others. Instead, you’re engaged in activities that actively affirm your wellbeing – and yours alone.
“Me time” could be practically anything you want it to be. You could start with something simple, like taking 30 minutes for a bath. Or it could be something more extravagant like a shopping trip or a weekend away. Whatever it is, you need to ensure that you don’t cloud it with other things in your life that cause you stress. For instance, if you go away on a trip, don’t take your work with you. You’ll never be able to relax if you do that.
Find Ways To Relax The Mind
The next step is to put your headspace in the right place. Many people schedule a time for relaxation but don’t enjoy the activities because they’re worried about what their boss will say to them on Monday morning.
If you struggle with errant thoughts, try to train your mind. Listen to some soothing music, run a bath, or visit a vape shop. Whatever it is, make sure that you’re doing something that takes away the anxiety and puts you in a better place.
Try Writing It Down
If you’re still finding it an uphill battle to switch off, try writing down your thoughts on paper. You’ll often find that the simple act of verbalisation is enough to put your head in a much better place.
People with depression and anxiety issues usually keep a journal that allows them to keep track of their psychological progress over time. The more they commit to it, the better they feel.
Focus On Relaxing The Body
Mind and body are not two separate entities. They interact with each other in meaningful ways. And it’s a two-way street. What goes on in the head affects the body and vice versa.
Try to relax your body by taking a walk or going to the gym. Often physical exercise makes all the difference and radically transforms how you feel.
You can also try getting a massage or spending a couple of hours in a hot tub.
If you are sensitive to caffeine, try swapping out your regular coffee or tea for cocoa or mint tea. Less stimulation can relax the body’s adrenal system, immediately helping you feel better.
