The Summer Blues

May 24, 2012 in Living

Don’t get me wrong, I love the summer. Like most people, when the sun is shining, the world seems like a much better place. It means that you can do more things; play in the garden, go for lovely walks, go to the beach, all of which are so much nicer if its sunny. It lifts the spirits, lightens the mood.

But there are some definite down sides to the sunny weather.

Firstly, it shows up all the dirt. I clean. I constantly clean, but life with four kids means that I don’t clean as meticulously as I did before. I don’t have the time. So when the sun streams in through the windows, all those grimy corners and dusty shelves are exposed to world. Not only that, but it quickly becomes obvious that my windows are in need of a good old scrub too.

Secondly, it means the whole world apart from me decides to expose bits of themselves that other people might not want to see. You know the people I mean. Some people see the first rays of sunshine as an excuse to strip off to the bare minimum and it is just so unnecessary. I’m there in my layers and layers, standing next to Mrs Vest Top and Shorts and it makes me shiver just looking at her.

Then there are those people who maybe need to take a quick peek in the mirror before they leave the house. I’m not trying to be mean, I’m no supermodel, but I dress accordingly. I certainly don’t look good in anything brief or tight fitting as it might put a lot of people off their dinner. But there are definitely some bodies that are better off covered!

My final issue is feet. I think I may be a podophobic! I hate feet, they are really disgusting. I’m not keen on mine, I despise my husband’s and if he even mentions the word ‘sandals’ I turn into a screaming mad woman. I am only happy if the socks stay on. I can cope with little feet. My children’s feet are lovely; all soft and smooth, but as we age, our feet just become horrible. So with the sun, comes the appearance of feet! It makes me shudder, just thinking about it.

Summer has always had this effect on me. Even as a teenager, I remember my mum would happily bare all in stroppy tops and shorts, but me? I was the stroppy mare in the big baggy jumpers and thick tights even on the hottest of days. I am very self conscious and not particularly fond of my body. I do envy the yummy mummies I have seen this week who all look gorgeous in their summer best and lovely tanned legs. If I got my legs out, they would look like a pair of chunky uncooked chips, so they will be staying put under my jeans.

And don’t even get me started on fake tan! That’s a whole other blog post! But for now, suffice to say that I will be enjoying the lovely weather; with lots of clothes on and some very dark glasses on.
