Identity theft is one of those things that a lot of people shrug at indifferently as though it couldn’t possibly happen to you. But sadly it is becoming increasingly common in the UK with figures on the rise every year. Identity theft occurs when someone fraudulently accesses enough personal information (name, date of birth, previous and current addresses, bank details) to use that information to pretend to be you and use those details to obtain credit, goods or services in your name. This can have long reaching effects on you which not only impact on your current financial situation but also prevent you from obtaining loans, credit cards or mortgages in the future.
It is so easy to put personal documents into the bin or recycling bin without thinking. Those harmless envelopes with your name and address on, receipts with parts of your credit cards on, letters with account numbers and other bits of information, CV’s, old credit card or bank statements. All of these things that are no longer any use to you but that take up much needed space might be very useful to someone else. It wouldn’t take long for an identity thief to piece all of those bits of information together to get enough to be able to use it. It’s a horrible thought is’t it? But one that we really need to have in order to make us much more careful about how we dispose of anything with personal information on.
One way to prevent identity theft from happening to you is to use a shredder. Personally, I have been a bit rubbish about this as I do have a small shredder and it overheats after five minutes, so I tend to rip everything up into small pieces myself instead, which is not ideal. But that will not be happening any more as the lovely people at Fellowes have sent me a Powershred 73Ci to review and I have to say that I didn’t think I would love a shredder, but this shredder is the most amazing thing and I have become ever so slightly obsessive about shredding since it arrived.
It is very sleek looking and has a touch screen back lit control panel at the front which you press to turn it on and off, change the direction of the paper and easily see if the bin is open, full or there are any other issues that need dealing with. It has castors that you can easily attach to the bottom which is really helpful as it is quite heavy to move around.
It really does make shredding a breeze and the other feature that I like is that it has a Safesense system that senses hands touching the opening and stops shredding immediately. This is particularly useful if I have young helpers with the job. However, the really great thing about the Powershred 73Ci is really quiet. Considering how big and powerful it is, it really does not make much noise. Our old shredder was so noisy that I couldn’t shred when A was in the house as it terrified the life out of her whereas she is quite happy to sit and watch me use this machine. Here is a really quick demonstration.
It does have a maximum shredding time of ten minutes after which it stops shredding and needs a twenty minute cool down before it will restart, but to be honest, the machine is so efficient, I managed to do all of my shredding easily before the ten minutes was up.
I am very impressed with my new Powershred 73Ci and it will certainly be used regularly in this house as it really does give us the peace of mind that our documents will not be used by an identity thief. Yes I totally agree you that document shredder plays a very important role in keeping you away from identity theft issues. Leaving your documents without shredding is a straight invitation to identity theft. Shredders are Eco friendly too. Before few months in Newport (America), an event was organized. In that event about 3000 pounds of documents got destructed and recycled. After calculation it is concluded that about 13 trees they saved. Now you can see that why we should use shredders.
