A Toddler No More

October 9, 2013 in Family, Family Life, Parenting

This evening I sat down at the computer to do my two school admission forms.  One for R who makes the move to middle school next September and one for A who starts school at the same time.  I hadn’t really given it much thought until tonight, it was simply on my ‘to do’ list and I wanted to get it sorted before the paperwork disappeared under everything else and got forgotten.

I typed in all of the details and then clicked on preview to double check and it hit me.  My little girl is going to school.  My baby.  I had to sit for a minute and think about it.  Maybe if I didn’t press the submit button, she wouldn’t have to go to school, she would have to stay here with me.
She isn’t a baby anymore of course and looking at her today, I was thinking how grown up she is all of a sudden. She isn’t a toddler anymore.  She talks and thinks like an older child. Her thought processes have developed and she can reason and be reasoned with.  We have some great conversations now and she has developed a real sense of fierce independence; she wants to and insists on doing everything for herself. She is more than ready to go to school, in fact we have a daily conversation about why she isn’t already in school and I am slightly concerned that the minute she turns four, she will be expecting to start school that day.  Patience isn’t her strong point (no idea where she gets that from).
Every now and then, we still have those tantrums but then the same could be sai about me and I’m definitely a few years past the toddler stage.  Every now and then, she likes to be ‘baby’ and she snuggles up in my arms and squeals like a baby, but she really now has become the ‘big girl’ she has been striving to be for the last twelve months or so.
So it was mixed feelings that I pressed the submit button.  One door closes and for A a whole new and exciting world is waiting behind the next door for her.  As for me, I fully intend on making the most of my time with her over the next few months and in response to one or two people who helpfully suggested having another baby to fill the void, I say no, that shop is most definitely closed.

Bless her! She looks so grown up! Even when I met her a year ago she seemed very grown up and independent for her age. It’s a bittersweet time, but we all adjust pretty quickly. Enjoy those last few precious months with your young lady!

Awww this will be me this time next year with Syd. Even the thought of him starting pre-school for a couple of afternoons a week when he turns 2 and a half in February is giving me heartache. I think maybe because, like you, he is definitely my last makes it a little more poignant. How did they get so big so fast! Glad to hear she is ready, I worry about Syd because as an August birthday he will only be a couple of weeks past his 4th birthday when he goes to school, but of course that is a whole 2 years away and he will be completely different by then!

I worried a lot with L as he is an end of August baby and there was definitely a difference, but they all survive and get on with it. It definitely is much harder when it’s your last one

It is harder with your baby, and I only have two with two years between so it wasn’t as if there was ages until my last baby started but she’s still my baby and although she looks so cute in her uniform and is doing brilliantly in the month or so since starting school, she’s still my baby! 😉 She thought she got to start as soon as she had her 4th birthday too, and was very disappointed she had to wait!

I am going through exactly this with my youngest and my heart is breaking. He should have started last September but I coudn’t get him into the same school as his brother, so he starts at a different one in a matter of week. Hold on tight, lady, it’ll fly xx

My eldest will start full time school next September (he will be nearly 5yo), the last four years have flown by! I have 3 children at the moment but would like to complete my family by adding a fourth in a year or so, most people think i am crazy, but i love my children and always dreamed of 4! I love your blog, Its lovely to read your posts and to know there are mums of larger than normal families out there, doing it right!
