My eight year old son loves school. Really he does, even though most of the time, he does a really good impression of someone who doesn’t. Whatever has happened in the morning, once he arrives at the school gates and is reunited with his friends, there is a huge smile on his face and off he runs chatting and laughing. It is the same when he comes out, he is usually full of smiles and chat about his day at school.
When he gets out of bed in the morning, it is a totally different story.
I have come to the conclusion this year that L is simply not a morning person. Long gone are the days when he used to wake up at a ridiculous hour and bounce out of bed, full of life.
Most mornings, he has to be dragged from his duvet; moaning and grumbling, he then proceeds to lie on the floor and refuse to get out of his pyjamas. When I have finally nagged and shouted him into submission, it is like watching something in slow motion as he takes around twenty minutes to get into his clothes.
It drives me crazy. I would love to say that I am calm and gentle with him but in truth I may start off that way but as the time we need to leave fast approaches, I get more and more agitated. Then, he will lie there in his boxer shorts and start looking at something on the iPad or in a book as though he has all the time in the world.
These are his usual excuses;
I don’t want to go to school. I am clever enough.
I’m just too tired.
School is so boring.
No-one will miss me.
My legs are broken.
My brain won’t work.
My pyjamas are stuck.
My tooth is too wobbly.
It’s raining.
So it goes on. There is always an excuse. Yesterday morning was a classic morning. He had stayed up to watch half of the World Cup final and was really tired anyway. He got up a little earlier to watch the end of the match and was quite happy with the outcome as he liked both teams. The final whistle blew and he sat there looking really sad. I turned off the television to start rallying everyone out of the door and as per usual everyone else got ready except for L. He was quite overwhelmed about the World Cup ending as he has loved it and he had tears in his eyes and his excuse of the day was; “I can’t go to school today as the World Cup has ended.”
Needless to say, he went to school yesterday … eventually.

My 6 year old is exactly the same on a morning….lol She comes up with some cracking excuses but nothing as good as that….hehehe

Bless him! That sounds quite challenging, but good to know he does actually enjoy it when he’s there. Love that sulky photo.

Challenging is a good word! He prides himself on being challenging I think
Haha -ahhh my hubby would have tried to use the World Cup one if he was still at school. The broken leg one made me chuckle 🙂

Yes I think my husband would too. It did make me smile too, bless him
Oh gawd this Is A. She absolutely loves school, but I think the thought of staying home with me, is still so enticing for her. She said when we got back from Center Parcs, she couldn’t go to school because she missed Bonnie (the pony) too much.

Aw that is so sweet! I would love to say that L wants to stay at home with me but sadly it is more a love of his duvet and pyjamas
Haha bless him. Glad it wasn’t a sad post. I would have to say that next time we shall avoid the World Cup if it makes you so sad lol.

Ha ha yes I could try couldn’t I? It is sweet that he loved it so much, he is already counting down to the next one.
At least he’s creative! Funny! I was a bit like that at that age; I just didn’t like mornings. And I turned out OK 😉

That’s good to know. He is a good lad, just not a morning person
Oh there’s always a better place to be than school! My middle daughter is exactly like this – she just loves her bed too much!

Well me too, so I probably don’t set the best example. He loves his bed and would happily live in his pyjamas, maybe if they swapped uniform for pyjamas I wouldn’t have a problem
We’ve had a lot of excuses in the past, although not so much at the moment. H isn’t big on school, but he’s happy enough once he gets there. Of course, he is very much an early bird (sadly I think he might have inherited that from me rather than his father).

L used to be a real early bird but in the last few months, he has started to sleep later and later. I find that once the darker nights come, he settles earlier at night and then wakes really early in the morning.
Is there a better excuse than that? 🙂

Oh I’m sure that he will come up with a better one somewhere along the line
Oh this blog post made me feel so much better, my 6 year old is exactly the same, down to the laying on the floor and the legs that mysteriously ‘don’t work’ on a school morning! Got to give him credit for his imaginative excuses though!

Oh yes, imagination is something that he does only too well. The thing is that he actually likes it once he gets there. Kids eh?
I feel your pain. Bacon & egg works for my nine year old. Otherwise, it’s the same here! X

Here’s to the end of term and not having to put up with any of this for the next few weeks! My 2 were a nightmare as they got older and often I’d be in a meltdown by the time I arrived for work!

Those are all amazing excuses 🙂 I wish I’d have thought of half of them as a kid. I was always a morning person though, so it wasn’t too hard to get me out of bed and to school.
