Cold

February 6, 2015 in Family, Life

It’s cold.

I do not like being cold.

Yes I know it’s winter. Yes I know that it is only really cold for a few weeks of the year. Yes I know that we are quite lucky living in an area where we don’t get much snow. Yes I know that I am probably one of the ‘typical’ Brits who moans about being too cold, too hot and is never happy whatever the weather. But seriously, this cold weather just makes me want to hibernate.

There really is something quite appealing about curling up somewhere nice and warm and shutting yourself away and shutting down through the cold weather and then waking up revitalised and refreshed with the first signs of spring. What a lovely thought.

I’m extremely grumpy at the moment and I know it is the time of year. Waking up and getting ready in the mornings while it still feels like the middle of the night outside makes me grumpy. Having to leave the warmth and security of my duvet makes me grumpy. Having to defrost the car in the morning makes me grumpy. Opening to door to a blast of icy wind makes me cross and the threat of snow makes me positively irritable.

I am not a big fan of snow.

Yes it is very pretty and fun. Except it is only fun for about fifteen minutes until you are all cold and soggy and need a hot bath and some warm clothes immediately. I think it is hugely overrated and like many things in this country, since the need to over share everything, we seem to have become obsessed with it; #uksnow keeps appearing everywhere I look.

Having said that, I’m quite happy looking at other people’s photos. The children are not. ‘When is it going to snow?’ is the question of the moment and each morning they leap out of bed enthusiastically to see if the magic has happened. One child (who shall remain nameless) even seems to think that I am personally responsible for the lack of the white stuff and looks at me accusingly saying things like “you don’t want it to snow, do you?.”

Well, no I don’t really but I would be happy for you if it did and I would trudge wearily out and play, looking like the Michelin man with thirty layers of clothing on.

It is looking unlikely though.  We live in a vale and I can count the number of times I have seen heavy snow fall here in my life time on one hand, so they are often disappointed. But the one bonus of experiencing something so rarely is that when it does, it is amazing.

So the heating is happily roasting us all alive and my husband and I are playing out little heating game (he turns it down and I turn it up), my skin feels like sandpaper and I keep looking at the weather forecast for some signs of change.

It will be spring soon won’t it? Until then, you will find me wrapped in a duvet, by the radiator.

a sprinkling of snow

I’m not a fan of the cold here either and at home there’s a serious case of cat envy going on. The family pet sleeps in the warm all day while we brave the elements and long for summer. Here’s to feeling warmer soon x

I am so with you! I always hate winter and cold, but usually I’m quite resilient. This year I’m totally fed up! For me I think it’s partly that it hasn’t snowed – it’s been very cold these past few weeks, but without the one fun bit of cold. It’s also partly because I’m on my own in the house five days a week and I feel it’s wrong to turn the heating on, so I don’t!

I love your writing Nikki, it’s brilliant. This made me laugh as I feel exactly the same at the moment. I’m in a rented house which is bloody Baltic and I am actually wearing fingerless gloves INSIDE the house and a jumper to bed every night. I hear ya girl…roll on Spring! xx

Thank you so much, that’s a lovely thing to say! Ha yes I have the fingerless gloves too and I am constantly making hot drinks to warm my hands too. I could so do with a holiday somewhere warm right now
