What would your family rules be?

July 9, 2015 in Family, Parenting

A couple of years ago, I did a review of a wall sticker which contained a set of family rules.  The rules were positive and sweet and it is still sitting in a prominent place in the kitchen and I often look at it and smile.

Our Family Rules
Our Family Rules

I would choose most of these rules and I do often point a couple of them out to the boys in particular; Love each other and use kind words.  Do your best, is a phrase I often use with them, they are all quite competitive and I have to remind them that it isn’t always about winning but if you do your best, that is all anyone can ask.

The other day I was having one of those days where I would pretty much do anything other than sit at my computer and work and I was rereading our rules.  It got me thinking about what our family rules would be if I had chosen them.

This is what I came up with

Winding people up might be fun for you, but it isn’t fun for the other person.

If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. (This one is currently written in capital letters on the chalkboard.)

Making people smile will make you smile with them.

Mealtimes should be happy times, at the table, with no devices and definitely no arguing.

If you get it out, you should put it away.

Dirty underpants that get left on that floor, stay on the floor.

Don’t upset the person who cooks, cleans and washes for you.

The car floor is not and never will be a dustbin.

Wardrobe and cupboard doors should not be left open.

Always try to make up with someone after a fight or an argument.

Don’t dwell on things, you can’t change the past, you have to learn from it and move on.

You can’t choose your family but they can be your best friends, so treat them well.

Please and thank you take very little effort but they go a long way.

You only live once, so don’t spend it being unhappy.

And finally one that I borrowed from Walt Disney; ‘if you can dream it, you can do it.’

Which rules would you choose?

Very important set of rules to be followed by all the members of the family.
“Don’t dwell on things, you can’t change the past, you have to learn from it and move on.” that is really positive one.

Absolutely love your rules! Can’t fault them.
I think I would have to add for my toddler “Cats are our friends not our toys” Yours are much more inspirational though! ha!
Loved reading your blog so far! Very entertaining and honest!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I think your cat rule is probably a very important one, we don’t have any pets so I don’t have to think about that too much.
