The thing about being a mum is it is hard to switch off. It doesn’t seem to matter how exhausted I am at the end of the day, some nights when my head finally head hits the pillow, something seems to go click in my brain and I find myself lying there with the strangest thoughts going through my head. My husband claims that it is because I am often working on my laptop before I go to bed. Personally, I think it is just how I unwind although some of the thoughts that go through my head are rather weird.
The ones I like to refer to as mindless minutiae
Have I put the pants and socks out for the morning?
How many hours until the alarm goes off?
I really must get the squeak in my bed frame sorted.
I need new pillows.
What shall I have for lunch tomorrow, I don’t fancy sandwiches?
How can I stop my husband’s snoring?
I really need to Google how to sort that problem on my computer.
What on earth are we going to have for tea tomorrow? (This one is usually an end of the week thought)
Have the boys switched the Xbox off?
How many weekends are there until Christmas?
What am I going to buy the children for Christmas?
I really should just quickly just check that thing on my laptop.
Where did I leave my phone?
There are the panicked thoughts
Did the children do their homework?
Did the child who was ranting about an urgent piece of homework get around to doing it?
Did I remember to switch everything off in the kitchen?
Is the freezer door shut properly?
Is the back door locked?
Have I remembered to fill in the (needs to be in tomorrow or else) form for school?
Is there bread for sandwiches tomorrow?
Did we remember to buy Shreddies (there is always one child who has to have Shreddies every morning and it would be a national catastrophe if there were none.)
Did I wash the PE kit that came home covered in mud?
I must remember to give (whichever child) money in the morning.
Where did I put my purse?
Then from the sublime to the ridiculous thoughts
Which other TV character shares the same voice person as Ice King from Adventure Time?
I really need to get rid of that spider’s web on the ceiling.
The diet starts tomorrow.
I could do with a massage. What was the name of that mum from school who knows someone who does massage?
That comment so-and-so made this morning, I wonder what they meant by it?
I really need to repaint this room. What colour should I go for?
How can I stop the boys peeing on the toilet seat?
Ooh that’s a good idea for a blog post. I should write that down before I forget.
I really need to go to sleep. Maybe I should try counting sheep. Or cows. Or pigs. Or chickens. No chickens are too noisy.
Where should we go on holiday next year?
What was the name of that company that so-and-so recommended today?
It is no wonder I am so tired when the alarm clock does finally go off in the morning. What strange things go through your head when you are trying to sleep?

This made me smile. I’m the other way round – I get to sleep OK, but then my brain pings into action any time between 4 and 5.30, usually worrying about what I have to remember for the day. I often think about lunch and tea too!

I’m worse in the evening, when I sit in my mess of a house and think about everything that needs doing too tired to do it!
Yes – we do think a lot of things in any one day!! I could identify with the one about a great blog post idea and I should write that down before I forget!! I keep a pen and paper by my bed for that reason!

Haha this sounds like my brain every night! I think it’s all part of being a Mother
I have a similar bed one that I only remember when I get into bed – our divan drawers are broken and need to be fixed as I have loads of clothes I can’t get too :/
At night my mind is too tired for all that, but it soon kicks in that way in the morning.
I am a real worrier – I try to clear my mind before bed time or I’m not able to sleep at all!
