5 Ways to Update Your Kitchen on a Budget

With the new year often comes an overwhelming urge to make changes around the house, whether it be clearing out clutter or updating a room or two.  If you are anything like me, having spent rather more than I wanted over Christmas, any changes will be on a limited budget, but that doesn’t mean that a quick update isn’t possible.  Top of my list this year is our kitchen which is long overdue an update.  If you take a look at the Kitchen Warehouse website, there is some great inspiration for amazing kitchen ideas. I would love to invest in new cupboards and units but that isn’t possible at the moment, so these are five things on my list to update the whole room without having to spend a fortune.

Rethink your kitchen storage

Is storage a problem in your kitchen? Whether you are feeling overwhelmed by clutter or simply want to update some storage space, there are endless options available.  Shelves or a nice shelf unit might be the perfect thing to add some colour to the room and it is practical too.  What about adding some storage baskets to the tops of your cupboards?  This makes an easy and tidy way to use that space and it is also easy to get things down when you need them.

Create a feature wall

One of the best things I did in our house last year was to create a feature wall in the living room and this is something that you can also do in the kitchen. Choose one wall and think about what you want to achieve with it?  You could paint the wall a different colour to make it stand out.  Alternatively, it could be a space to show off your kid’s latest masterpieces or even fill the wall with some family photos. Whatever you do, it needs to be a wall that makes you smile every time you walk into your kitchen, something to gaze at while you are waiting for the kettle to boil

Repaint your cupboard doors and update your cupboard handles

Your kitchen units are in need of some TLC and you would love to replace them.  There are lots of really great deals out there for replacing kitchen units. If you aren’t ready to make that investment just yet, that doesn’t mean that you can’t update those cupboards if they are looking a little worn or old-fashioned.  Why not paint the doors? You should be able to take the doors off fairly easily allowing you to be able to paint them back and front without too much difficulty.  There are a number of paint options on the market which allow you to paint on a number of different surfaces, just check to see if you need to use a primer first.  Once painted, why not invest in some new handles or knobs and suddenly your kitchen will look like new.

Add in a few colourful accessories

It is amazing what can be achieved by adding a few well-chosen accessories to your kitchen. If you have shelves, why not show off your favourite pieces of crockery or invest in some new pieces that will brighten up your kitchen.  Alternatively, invest in some new jars for your kitchen essentials, either clear to show the contents or coloured to fit in with your kitchen colour scheme.

With many of us spending so much time in our kitchens each day, it is a room that is worth updating and whatever you decide to do, I am certain it will make you enjoy being in there even more.
