Looking to Improve Your Mental Wellbeing in 2019 – Sleep May be the Answer

January 8, 2019 in Living

As a mum, there is absolutely no doubt that you find yourself pulled in many directions at any one time. Looking after the kids, the house, working at a job, and also caring for yourself are all full-time tasks. All of this constant juggling of responsibilities, chores, and jobs can not only wear you down physically but also mentally, leaving you feeling as though you can’t possibly handle one more thing on your plate.

If your goal for 2019 is to improve your mental wellbeing, then you may be surprised at what a key answer can be. Did you know that sleep can be a huge determining factor in a person’s mental wellbeing? Getting enough good quality sleep each and every night can play a huge role in just how mentally-equipped you are to handle everything thrown your way. Doctors and researchers alike have documented the connection between mental health and sleep quality, but that doesn’t mean people are fully aware of just how connected they are.

Of course, as a parent sleep can seem like a rare luxury, which is why it may take a bit more effort on your part to ensure it happens. With that in mind, here are some tips that you can use that will help set you up for success where sleep is concerned, and will thereby improve your mental wellbeing in 2019.

Set Up Your Own Bedtime Routine

You are likely very familiar with what a bedtime routine is; as a parent, you probably have one for the kids. Well, the same practice can be used for yourself to help ensure that you are getting enough sleep each night. You can use the same approach in that you allow yourself a period of time to wind down before bed; do something relaxing like take a hot shower or bath, read, or listen to soft music; avoid foods and drinks that may act as stimulants and keep you awake; and remove the TV from your room.

Now, just like with any new routine, it can take a bit of time to get used to, but the trick is to stick with it until it becomes a habit.

Is it Time for a New Mattress?

Sometimes, even with all your best efforts of going to bed at a consistent time each night and having a steady bedtime routine, it can still be hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. One culprit could actually be your mattress. There are a number of signs to look for that will indicate that it is time to buy a new one. This includes such things as a mattress that is more than 10 years old, one that is lumpy in places, one that creaks a lot, is saggy, and has you waking up with aches and pains each morning.

Finding the best mattress can be made a lot easier and faster by checking out The Best Mattress Buying Guide on The Mattress Nerd site. This guide takes a look at the various things you should look for in a mattress and how to tell if it’s the right one for your specific needs.

Invest in Comfortable Bedding

Another tip is to splurge and get yourself some comfortable new bedding. Look for sheets that are lightweight, soft, and breathable so that they will be comfortable all year-round no matter the temperature. Something like bamboo sheets can be an excellent solution and feel incredibly soft against your skin.

Keep the Bedroom Cool

The temperature of your bedroom will also play a big role in just how much sleep you are able to get. The majority of people out there will find they don’t get as much or such good sleep if the room is too warm. You’re better to keep your room a bit on the cool side and add an extra blanket if needed. Experts suggest keeping your bedroom at 70°F in order to promote good quality sleep. This may require a portable or ceiling fan to be used in your bedroom.

Cut Out the Naps

Do you find yourself stealing naps when the kids nap during the day? While this may seem like a great way to catch up on your sleep, in most cases this will be counter-productive and will leave you lying there awake, staring at the ceiling, and unable to sleep come bedtime. While there is nothing wrong with a short little power nap during the day, long naps will most definitely mess with your internal clock.

Enjoy Improved Mental Wellbeing

Each of these tips will help you start to create a healthier sleep routine that ensures you’re getting enough rest each night. This will create a positive effect not just on your energy levels but your overall mental wellbeing, allowing you to tackle the day in a better manner.
