What is the Best Way to Publish Videos on a Blog?

April 28, 2019 in Blogging

As you may be aware there are many different ways that you can publish videos on a blog. But what you’ve probably wondered about is: Which is best?

The short answer is that there is no ‘best’ option to publish videos on a blog. Each of the options available to you has advantages and disadvantages.

The real question is which option is the best fit based on the requirements that you have. And to answer that you need to first know a bit about each option:

  • Self-host HTML5 videos

Technically you could upload a video to your webhost and add it to your blog as a HTML5 video. However if you do there are many factors you need to consider such as the storage space and bandwidth required.

On top of that you will need to create many versions of the video in different resolutions and formats to ensure they are optimized and compatible. Suffice to say this is a very difficult option – and not one that you should pursue unless you have a solid grasp on what you’re doing.

  • Embed videos from free video streaming platforms

Nowadays there are lots of free video streaming platforms where you can upload videos and then embed them onto your website. Unlike self-hosting videos, you don’t need to worry about storage space, bandwidth, compatibility, or coming up with different versions of the video.

Because of how easy it is, embedding videos is currently the most popular way to publish videos on blog. Most bloggers tend to upload videos to YouTube and embed them from there.

The downside of this option is that the video streaming platform may direct some of your visitors to other videos on its site – and away from yours.

  • Paid content delivery networks (CDN) or video streaming services

Unlike free platforms, paid CDNs and video streaming services provide you with more control over your videos and typically do not direct visitors to any other content. They share all the other advantages of embedding videos, making them an easy option to use.

The only drawback of going down this route is that it can be costly. The cost of using paid CDNs and video streaming services vary, typically based on the total file size or bandwidth that is used.

Regardless of the option you choose you should use Video Converter Online to make sure your video is in the right format before you upload it. It is web-based and easy-to-use, as you can see by following the steps at https://www.videoconverter.com/how-to-convert-mov-to-mp4.html.

Based on what you now know it should be easy to figure out which option to use when you want to publish videos on your blog. In most cases embedding videos from free video streaming platforms will be good enough – despite the risk of visitors being diverted from your blog.

However if you do want more control over your videos – you now know enough about the other two options to figure out which one you want to use.
