Father’s Day is an incredibly important day in our house, but I’m also conscious that these special days are becoming even more commercialised, pressured and over the top.
So that got me thinking.
How can we enjoy a truly magical Father’s Day but without getting ourselves involved in all of the hype and stress that tends to come with it?
Here are some ideas:
- Enjoy Breakfast in Bed
Rather than rushing to get up and get out of the house to do something with all the other dads around the world, why not treat Dad to breakfast in bed instead?
If the kids are old enough, get them involved in making it and allow them to serve the king of the house in style.
This extra effort will really put a smile on dad’s face and I’m sure he’ll appreciate the extra-long stay in bed!

- Homemade Cards
One of the most stressful things about Father’s Day, when you’ve got kids, is finding a card that they’re all happy with. We’ve spent hours trawling through shops trying to find the perfect card and it’s definitely not fun!
So if you’ve got time this year (this is also perfect if rain stops play), why not get crafty with the kids and create your own homemade cards? Little ones can add cute touches such as handprints while the older ones might want to have a go at writing a heartfelt message or even a poem.
Again, it’s the attention to detail that will mean so much to dad.
- A Treasured Gift
If it’s dad’s first Father’s Day or another momentous one (maybe you’ve just had another baby), why not make this day one to remember with a keepsake gift?
Some ideas include a watch, bracelet, personalised hip flask or something else that you know dad will appreciate. Get the kids involved in choosing the item as this will add to its sentimental value.
- A Meal at Home
Finally, if you don’t fancy eating out on Father’s Day and would rather have a lovely family gathering at home, why not sign the kids up to cooking a three-course meal (you might need to help, of course!).
This personal, intimate meal in with the family will boast far more magic than dining out with loads of strangers and can really help the kids feel as though they’re going one step further for dad this year.
Look at the ways you can add occasion to the meal, whether that’s with balloons from the likes of Card Factory or getting dressed up as waiters for the evening.
You’ll find plenty of cooking inspiration for the kids online because, let’s face it, Father’s Day doesn’t need to involve a traditional roast. From pasta to pizza, why not cook dad some of his favourite food?
Getting the kids involved in choosing recipes will help build their excitement for the day, too. And this will add even more special moments to the day for dad.
