Being a parent means putting your children first, putting your family first and barely ever thinking about yourself. However, there are times when you really do need to put yourself first, and despite what you might think, this is not selfish, in fact, it is the total opposite of selfish. Making time for yourself strengthens you as a person meaning that you can support others better. You will be no use to anyone if you have used all your energy on looking after other people. Self-care is a perfect solution to stress as well as it builds resilience so you can cope better. Just like when you’re on a plane, and you’re told to put on your oxygen mask first before you help others. While you should support others, you should put yourself first. Your relationships are a reflection of the person you are, and those closest to you will recognise your capacity to love (or lack thereof). When you learn to care for yourself, you will eventually attract others who can do the same.
Remember that life is short and you only get one life, so you don’t want to be looking back at your life with regret. Happiness is what you make it, and you can transform your life just by maintaining a positive outlook on it. Making time to take care of your body, take pride in your achievements, and value your contribution to the world around you as this will help you to be happy.
Looking after yourself is essential no matter what age you are. However, you may need to pay closer attention to your body as you get older because things change as you age. For example, your bones will likely become thinner and more brittle. Conditions such as osteoporosis are caused by thinning bones and decreasing bone mass. This will also make you at risk of falls, which could give you broken bones. To prevent this, make sure you have a nutritious diet and a good calcium intake as well as a decent supply of vitamin D.
Being the best you can be for your family is very important, so never put off going to the doctor, never put off any symptoms you have which are worrying you and don’t be ashamed of any problem. If you’re suffering from hearing problems, your eyesight or something ‘downstairs’, it’s essential to get it checked out immediately to make sure it doesn’t get any worse. These days there are so many advanced fixes for health problems too, there are Miracle-Ear hearing aids, stylish glasses, and thankfully, mental health is being talked about more and more today. However, some people are still embarrassed about suffering from depression or anxiety and worry that it makes them weak, they fear they are not entitled to feel this way, or they don’t know how to tell people. Everyone has mental health, though and just like physical health; it can sometimes be a problem for you. There are things you can do to help though, such as changing your diet, exercising, writing down your thoughts, meditating or speaking to a doctor.
Remember to take some time for yourself each day, even if it’s just five or ten minutes. It’s essential, and not just for you but for your family too.
