If you are someone that likes to craft and be creative, or you’re currently being thrown into homeschooling, then self-isolation and life in lockdown can be a hard adjustment to get used to. A necessary one, of course. But did you ever imagine a time in your life where you’d find being at home so tough? With a little extra time on your hands, as schools are closed, gyms are closed, and the children’s extracurricular activities are all cancelled, you might find that you have a little more time to dedicate to crafting. You might have some projects on the go that you’ll finally be able to finish, or perhaps you want to try something new. Here are a few ideas to help you be productive and get your craft on, all while self-isolating.
Cross Stitch
Learning to cross stitch, if you don’t already know, is something that is really simple to learn, but can be really rewarding. It is something that older children can pick up quite easily too. If you don’t have any of the kit in, then you could buy a kit online to have it delivered. If you already have a sewing kit, then you’re good to go. You can even find cross stitch patterns online.
Bake Sourdough
Baking may not actually count as being a craft, but it can be a fun way to spend the time, and there is a lot of science in there for any homeschoolers. Making a sourdough starter or culture is the place to start, and you’re likely to have everything in that you need. A clean jar needs around 75g of flour and 75ml of warm water. Stir it up and then leave it somewhere warm. For a few days, add another lot of flour and water, measurements as before, and then you will start to see some bubbles. After around seven days of doing this, the starter can be put in the fridge, and good to use as a starter for making sourdough.
Painting
With all of the stress and uncertainty going on at the moment, there has never been a better time to get on the mindfulness trend! Painting is a great way to help, as it means that you are focused on something else completely. You might have something that you want to draw, or perhaps you could order a paint by numbers for adults, like Winnie’s Picks, as there are a lot of sites that do them. Then when you have something to display afterwards, framing it using a site like Best4Frames, you can feel really proud and accomplished. It can be a great way to pass the time, which can be much needed for isolation.
Macrame
Macrame has been something that has been taking over Instagram home decora accounts, but it could be something that you can do yourself. It is quite retro, but you can macrame wall displays or even plant pot holders. It is something that is easier than knitting, but quite similar, so why not look up how to give it a go?
Beading
Beading entails stringing beads to create jewelry and other decorative items. Learning to do beadwork is relatively easy, depending on the pattern you follow. To get started, you have to get a wide assortment of beads and beading tools and supplies. You can browse the internet for free jewelry and decorative beading patterns or buy a beading guidebook. If you want to, you can even sell your finished projects on Etsy and other online marketplaces!
