Before you find yourself struggling to find the windshield wipers in a downpour on a strange road, take the time to get familiar with the controls while you’re still in the car lot.

You should also brush up on your knowledge of car dashboard symbols, especially if you’re driving a newer car with safety indicators.
Make All Necessary Adjustments for All Drivers
While you’re locating the various controls in the car, you should also take the time to make adjustments that will make driving safer and more comfortable. That includes adjusting the seat, as well as all rearview mirrors.
If someone else in your vehicle was added as an approved driver to your rental contract, make sure they adjust the car before they start driving too. Look to see if the vehicle has more than one setting and program exactly where you want your seats before you take off.
Get the Kids Settled Comfortably in the Backseat
Traveling with kids can increase your chances of getting into an accident. That’s because children can be very demanding from the backseat, which can cause you to try to bend around while you’re driving to deal with an issue they’re having.
Stay safe and get your kids settled in the backseat before you hit the road. That means getting their car seats properly installed, providing them with something to drink, plenty of snacks, and a few different things to do if they get bored.
Car organizers can make this much easier. Surprise your children with a fun organizer filled with games and craft supplies right before you leave. The excitement of getting something new should keep them entertained at least for a little while!

Getting lost can be stressful. It can be even more stressful if you’re lost while dealing with cranky kids. Do yourself a favor and make sure you always GPS where you’re going. Even if you’re returning to the hotel and you think you know where you’re going, or if you’re going somewhere that’s only a few blocks away, it doesn’t hurt to plug in the details of your destination.
Make sure you bring along a paper map too, just in case. GPS systems aren’t always properly updated, and it isn’t uncommon for drivers to lose their signal, especially in rural areas. If you have a paper map, you’ll always be able to find your way.
Bring Proof of Insurance With You
You probably make sure you carry an updated insurance card in the glove compartment of your vehicle at home, but do you have proof of insurance with you when you’re driving your rental car?
Grab your insurance card from your car glove compartment before you go on vacation so you can place your card in the glove compartment of the rental car. If you’re worried you won’t remember it, take a picture with your phone, or print an extra copy to keep in your wallet. A digital e-card can work too, as long as you make sure they are a legal way to prove your insurance where you’re traveling.
