When you’ve got picky teens, difficult tweens or fussy younger ones, decorating a bedroom for them can be like trying to negotiate a maze. It’s so easy to take a wrong turn and find that no one’s happy. So, how do you turn a spare room into the perfect children’s bedroom?
Before you start
So, before you start picking out colour schemes and deciding on new furniture, there may be a few things that need fixing. If the walls seem a bit rough or bumpy, they may need a new coat of plaster. You can get a plasterer to do this for you, or you could learn how to skim a wall yourself. It will depend on your practical skills and budget.
If the electrics haven’t been touched in a while, you may want these checking. And if the window is single glazed, that may benefit from updating too. These jobs are good to get out of the way first, as they can create a lot of mess.
Ready for decorating
Once you’ve fixed any issues with the room itself, you can start picking out colours and materials for your child’s new room. What colour scheme you choose will probably depend on your children’s favourite colours. But there are a few things to consider before you start getting carried away with the paint brushes.
The first thing to consider is whether the colours your choosing will be outgrown too quickly. Baby blues and pinks may not stay in favour long with your growing child. And some colour schemes may not work well for helping your child sleep. It’s thought that bright yellows, oranges and reds are colours that help keep us alert. So, these may not work if you’re hoping your little ones are going to sleep soundly.
Choosing the right furniture
Before a room is fully kitted out with furniture it may seem deceptively spacious. So, it’s easy to get too carried away with buying more furniture than you can easily fit into the room.
Measuring the room first will give you a good idea of what space you really have. Draw a plan out on paper and use that to work out where a bed will fit best and how much room you’re left with for other furniture items.
If you can’t fit a wardrobe and set of drawers in the room, perhaps choose a wardrobe that has a couple of drawers incorporated into it. If you can’t accommodate a desk and a bed, have a look at beds with desk space underneath.
