If you’re looking after a newborn baby and you’re struggling to remember who you were before this baby came into your life, then try not to worry. Many new mums experience an identity crisis which can last for months, or even years after giving birth.
Having a baby is like voluntarily turning your life upside down. Especially in those first few months, you’ve gone from being a pretty selfish human being to focusing all your attention on somebody who is fully dependent on you. Before long, you’ll begin to forget what life before a baby was like- and when that happens, you can easily feel like you’ve lost touch with yourself.
The good news is that this feeling doesn’t last forever, and most mums report feeling back to normal after the one-year mark. In the meantime, here are things that you can do to help you feel like yourself again:
Take Care Of Your Mental Health
Perhaps the most important thing you should do after giving birth is to take care of your mental health. It can be easy to disregard all types of self-care and put your full attention into caring for your baby- especially at the beginning- but the fact is, if you’re not happy, then you’ll find it much harder to keep your baby happy.
Many new mums experience postnatal depression or increased levels of anxiety, so if you’re struggling with difficult emotions, then make sure you talk to a friend or your GP about how you’re feeling.
Look After Your Body
Just like your mind, your body also needs nurturing after you’ve given birth. Pregnancy and labour put our bodies through so much, and it’s important that you are patient with yourself during your recovery. At first, try not to think about ‘snapping back’ into shape or getting your post-baby body back. You need to be fully healed before you can embark on any diets.
After some time, you may feel ready to lose the baby weight. Some diets can be incredibly fussy or long-winded, and when you have a baby, you don’t have much extra time to be counting calories or tallying up your sin points.
Instead, why not consider using a meal replacement shake service like Shake That Weight? They offer shakes that come in powdered form which are incredibly easy to make using milk or water- saving you bags of time. Shake That Weight also offer a personalised diet plan, so if you’re ready to shift your baby weight, then try this.
Meet With Other New Mums
Being a new mum can often be a lonely experience, so it’s reassuring to know that other people are going through the same thing. You could make friends at a local mummy and baby group, or through forums and chatrooms online.
Sometimes your friends without kids just don’t get it- and if you ever need any 3am advice, then it’s guaranteed that at least one of your mum friends will be awake and happy to help.
