How To Boost Your Child’s Academic Potential

May 28, 2021 in Parenting

We all want our children to do well at school as we know it can change their future. When they get good grades, pass their tests and exams, and take an interest in learning, they can boost their chances of a happier adulthood.

As parents, there is much we can do to help our children, so consider the following. No matter how well your child is doing academically at the moment, you might be able to boost their academic potential if you take the following steps.

#1: Get your child into a good school

When looking at schools in your local area, consider those that are best suited to your child. Which schools cater to your child’s particular needs? Which schools go above and beyond for the children in their care? Talk to other parents, check Ofsted reviews online, and visit your local schools to gain a better understanding. Of course, you aren’t only limited to schools in your catchment area. If you’re part of a particular faith group, you may be eligible for a religious school just outside of your local area. You could consider sending your child to a private boarding school as well. Weigh up all of your options and send your child to the school that you think will help them succeed.

#2: Provide learning opportunities outside of school

You can use everyday experiences as learning opportunities, such as when you’re watching television with your child, or when you’re visiting places in your town. Talk to your child about the things they see and hear, listen to what they have to say and encourage them to think deeper, and provide activities at home. You could play board games that teach maths or spelling, for example, and you could download educational apps onto their mobile devices.

#3: Look for extra-curricular activities

If your school offers extra-curricular activities, sign your children up for anything that you think will help their learning. Especially when the activity is aligned with your child’s interests, you should encourage them to attend as they will better enjoy the learning opportunity. This will show them that learning can be fun! There might also be classes worth trying outside of school, so check with your local leisure and community centres and find something you think will benefit your child.

#4: Take an active interest in your child’s school work

What is your child learning at school? Find out and then do what you can to help them with their lessons. You could look for learning material online, perhaps by looking for games and fun worksheets that can complement the curriculum. You could sit with your child when they’re doing their homework too, and offer help if they are struggling with any subject. If your child needs assistance that you can’t provide, you could also hire a private tutor. Your child’s teacher will be glad of the help you can offer, and so will your child, even if they don’t realise it when you’re reminding them about their homework.

So, do what you can to support your children with their schooling as they will experience the benefits later. Use the ideas we have discussed here and talk to your child’s teachers for further advice.
