So, you’re currently dealing with solicitors in Blackheath, Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, or wherever you live in the UK, to finalise your divorce? Well, the truth is that a divorce can have a huge impact on both your physical and mental health.

For starters, you have the emotional side of a potentially fraught and sad divorce, not to mention the life change this will bring. On top of that, you have the financial burden of the proceedings, as well as having to live off one salary, if any. Then, you also have to deal with organising things for both children and pets, and even think about a new place to live!

Ultimately, your whole life will be uprooted, which is why staying in control of your mental health is paramount. In this article, we’ll be providing some tips to do just that. Take a look…

10 Tips to Maintain Good Mental Health During Your Divorce

1.   Take Care of Your Body Through Exercise

One of the keys to a healthy mind is a healthy body. In fact, studies have shown that exercising regularly not only releases endorphins (those feel-good chemicals), but it also boosts cognitive function too! This could be the perfect remedy to a healthy mindset throughout this tough time.

Practicing yoga or Pilates is a great way to de-stress, improve your strength, flexibility and overall physical and mental wellbeing. If you are passionate about yoga or Pilates and feel you would enjoy helping people in their fitness journey, why not become a yoga instructor or Pilates teacher?

2.   Take Care of Your Body Through Food

It’s not just exercise that can work wonders for your mental health, though. Mind has provided some great information about how certain foods can alter your mood and help you to think more clearly. This can only be a good thing during your divorce, right?

3.   Take Time for Yourself

The divorce is likely to take up a huge portion of your time, alongside getting to grips with your new life. So, be sure to schedule in time for yourself through all the madness. After all, you will likely be spending more time on your own from now, so why not get better acquainted with yourself?

Spending time alone can come in any form. Some ideas could include:

  • Watching that TV series you always wanted to, but never got round to.
  • Treating yourself to a solo meal out.
  • Heading to the spa, or even just doing a spa day at home.
  • Sitting somewhere peaceful to read.
  • Journaling and meditating.

4.   Get Out in Nature

Nature truly is healing, so be sure to spend some time out in the open when you can. This could come in the form of exercise, by taking a walk, run or cycle through some local scenery. Alternatively, you could simply head to a local green or even into your back garden with a good book and some sun cream.

Whatever you decide, you’d be surprised at how grounding getting outside into the world can feel. It’s certainly not to be underestimated.

5.   Take Time to Grieve

Grief is the natural human reaction to loss, and the truth is that during a divorce you lose a lot of things. Whether it be the loss of the life you once led, the loss of a love, the loss of time with your kids, or the loss of a home, it can turn your life upside down.

Because of this, you may experience feelings of grief during your divorce, and that’s completely normal. So, be sure to recognise this feeling, and take time to grieve this loss before working on moving on.

6.   Spend Quality Time with Friends

Life often gets in the way of friendships, especially if you’ve been in a long-term relationship or marriage for many years. So, why not use this time to meet up with friends, and maybe even reconnect with some older friends. Now is the perfect time!

7.   Go on an Adventure

Whether you decide to go with friends, family, or alone, heading on an adventure could be just what your soul needs. This could be something as little as taking a hike somewhere or heading to your favourite restaurant, to taking a weekend or week-long trip away! Taking this time to refresh and recuperate may be just what you need to get back to yourself.

8.   Rebuild Your Identity

Mindwise provides this brilliant tip in their article about post-divorce life. After all, being in a relationship for so long can make you lose sight of who you are.

So, they recommend investing in your hobbies, volunteering, and even forming new friendships. It could be just the ticket to finding yourself again.

9.   Talk to Someone

Speaking to someone is essential to getting your feelings off your chest and moving on. A counsellor can provide an impartial view on the situation, which could be exactly what you need during this tough time. Alternatively, if you just want a shoulder to cry on, you could rely on friends or family for the job.

Whoever you choose, don’t keep it all bottled up!

10. Embrace Your New Future

Now that your divorce and new life is in sight, the best thing to do is embrace it. This is an opportunity to change things up and shape your life to be exactly how you want it!

Of course, this is easier said than done, but the first step is to never look back, and only look forward, and go from there.
