How has September come around already? It feels as though the summer holidays flew past in seconds and here we are all back to school and some people (people who I am not much of a fan of) are even daring to talk about Christmas.
It has been a few months since I wrote a catch up post. Although it feels as though we haven’t done much, we have had driving tests, exam results and new jobs, so it has been quite busy really.
We made the decision not to go on holiday this year. The boys aren’t fans of holidays in the UK and we didn’t want to risk going abroad this year. When I did briefly think that a week away would be nice, a quick look at the prices soon shut my ideas down. Seriously, the cost of ‘staycationing’ went through the roof this summer.
So we spent a few days away in Wales with family, did a theme park day, went camping in West Wales and did lots of day trips. It was actually quite nice simply being at home, having lazy mornings and making the most of not having to rush around like lunatics.
The older teen passed his driving test. This is always a moment of mixed emotion for any parent: pride, of course that your child has become independent and mixed in with that, relief that you are no longer their personal taxi service. But there is also a large pinch of anxiety, the independence is all well and good but it means that you are awake waiting for them to come home, hoping that they haven’t crashed.
The whole driving thing has been a bit of an experience for me too, I pretty much taught him to drive due to lockdown and a long waiting list for an instructor. He didn’t have a huge number of lessons and I have to say that although the driving test routes app that we used to practise was so incredibly annoying, it was a godsend and really helped him to prepare for the big day.
The younger teen had GCSE results and I was absolutely blown away by his results. He did so well and we were emotional wrecks as school hasn’t been easy for him at times and this means the start of sixth form and a whole new chapter for him.
Rugby is back and both boys are playing in the same team for one year only. They played their first match today and it was so lovely to see all of the boys, well I say boys, they are now men, enjoying the match today. It also makes life so much easier for us as the same team means no more split Sundays going off to different matches, Sport is so important for both boys and it is lovely that they can play again after what feels like a very long time.
I have started a new job this week, in the same school I have been working at for two years, but a completely new role which is exciting and slightly terrifying at the same time. After so many years of being ‘mum’ it is nice to focus on my career again and now the kiddos are all older and independent, I can let go of the reins and do something for myself again.
So that is life lately in our house. For now, it is back to be super-organised, packing lunches, school bags and waking up at an ungodly hour in the morning. But we love it really.
