5 Reasons to Always Have Plenty of Sweets Around for the Kids

December 20, 2022 in Living

Having sweets around for kids to munch on can be beneficial for positive behaviour. Sweets come in many shapes and sizes, and not all are bad. Feeding kids can be tough, but sweets are the one food that’s easy to master.

1. A Special Reward

When you want to reward kids, a lot of ideas come to mind. You can search for cookies near me, or you can go into the kitchen and make some sweets from scratch. While instant gratification is nice with premade candy, it’s the cooked treats that kids will remember. There is something unforgettable about seeing a parent in the kitchen making your favorite sweet. Each time a kid sees this, it reminds them that the treat is a reward. Don’t get caught off guard by not having a bunch of ingredients ready to cook! Nothing takes the air out of room like telling a kid you can’t make their favorite sweet.

2. Friends

When a kid has their friends over, having sweets available is a great icebreaker. Growing up, every kid has the equivalent of a ‘candy lady’ in their neighborhood. The candy lady even outranks the ice cream man! When sweets are readily available at a home, kids and their friends won’t have to rummage around for snacks. Parents that don’t stock up on sweets usually end up with a lot of random snacks missing from their kitchen.

3. As a Deterrent

There are low quality sweets that parents try to keep away from their children. Having alternatives stocked up in your home can prevent temptation. This is especially important if for parents that have a strong preference for chocolate types. If you prefer dark chocolate over milk chocolate, then it makes sense that the house will be filled with the former. Temptation for the wrong type of treats will always be there, but a controlled environment like the home can always be a positive deterrent.

4. Teaching

There are countless teachable moments throughout childhood. Sweets as a reward is great for appreciation, but sweets for teaching is a little bit different. School teachers will often keep sweets around to use in examples when guiding students. Using a treat as a visual math problem is an easy way to get kids to pay attention. Once the examples have served their purpose, eating the sweet becomes that much tastier!

5. Variety

Variety is important for broadening the tastebuds of children. There are plenty of sweets to try, but kids will be less likely to try if the availability is scarce. Keep a lot of different treats in the home to encourage kids to sample new things. As their tastebuds develop, kids will use this new experience in other parts of their life. It’s a simple thing, but variety with sweets is an amazing adventure!

Make the Kitchen Fun

By being selective with treats, kids will only get the best you have to offer. Halloween and special occasions are not the only time to enjoy something sweet.
