Going on your first holiday as a family is one of the most exciting milestones once you have children. Yet it can also be a bit of a nightmare if you aren’t properly prepared for it. No longer can you just wing it as you go, instead it requires a lot more planning and organisation. Whether you are going abroad, heading on a staycation or have booked a road trip, there are a few different things you can do.
Find things to keep them entertained on the journey
Whether you are heading abroad on a plane, train or car, you are going to want to find things to keep your little one entertained on the journey. Be sure to pack plenty of snacks and drinks as well as things such as games and books that can help keep them distracted. If you are bringing electronics, it’s a good idea to invest in a portable charger so you don’t need to worry about them running out of charge mid-journey!
Decide on the accommodation you want
When looking into your holiday, you need to decide on the accommodation that suits you best. You could choose an apartment or self-catered villa if you are looking for some privacy, although with this you will need to do the tidying and cooking yourself. You could also consider a hotel which has the benefits of having things such as the cooking and cleaning done for you, but you will have to share areas such as the pool and other communal areas with other families and holiday-makers. Do some research into which accommodation you think will suit your family the best.
Pack strategically and don’t bring too much
Packing without a child is a lot easier than packing with one. As long as you have your passport and change of clothes, the rest isn’t usually too important. With a child, particularly if they are a toddler or younger, you need to be a lot more prepared. You want to ensure you have adequate sun protection both for you and your little one to keep your skin safe in the sun, as well as a hat, changes of clothes and things like bottles and child toys. Make a list and try not to pack too much, covering the essentials.
These are just a few top tips for taking your child on their first holiday abroad. Be sure to take plenty of photos and don’t put too much pressure on yourself if things don’t go to plan.
