Dress Modestly
For reasons both religious and cultural, it’s important to dress modestly in Middle Eastern countries – whatever your gender! Your shoulders and knees should be covered at all times, and clothing shouldn’t be too tight or revealing. For foreign women, a hair covering isn’t always required for visiting local attractions, though packing a lightweight scarf is something we recommend just in case.
Many travellers panic about being overcome by the extreme heat of the Middle East, and are unsure how heat safety corresponds with modest clothing! Battling the hot sun can be just as easily done with loose-fitting layers of cotton and linen than shorts and swimwear.
Avoid PDA
PDA – or rather, Public Displays of Affection – is often frowned upon in the Middle East. If you’re travelling with your beloved, we understand the urge to hug or kiss throughout the day! Love is always in the air, after all. But, as PDA is illegal for unmarried couples in countries like Dubai, it’s best to stay safe and leave the hand-holding for home.
Greeting Customs
Greeting customs in the Middle East are quite different to the West, as they are gendered. Hugging, a kiss on the cheek or a handshake is a big no-no between unrelated men and women. As a female traveller, it’s recommended you stick to a polite ‘Hello’ and nod! To reciprocate this greeting, a Middle Eastern man may place his hand over his heart instead.
