Proactive Ways To Make Your Health A Priority

June 15, 2023 in Living

Life for many of us is a juggling act. Between work, looking after children, running a household and other commitments, it can be tough to find the time to worry about health and well-being. Many people let their health slide when life gets hectic or difficult, but looking after our bodies and minds should always be a priority. If you’re looking to improve your health, here are some simple ways to be more proactive in taking care of yourself.

Plan a healthy weekly menu

A good diet forms strong foundations for optimum health. Your body relies on you to provide it with essential nutrients. If your diet lacks key vitamins and minerals, you don’t eat enough, or you consume foods that don’t offer nutritional value, your health may suffer. Try to plan a healthy weekly menu. Planning ahead can save time, effort and money and it will also guarantee that you get the nutrients you need. Look for quick, nutritious recipes or try batch cooking or making meals with fresh ingredients if you’re short on time.

If you don’t know how nutritious your diet is, it’s a brilliant idea to use a food diary app. When you enter foods or ingredients and add serving sizes, your app will provide you with nutritional information. You can see if you’re hitting the recommended daily intake for iron, protein, fibre and key vitamins and adjust your menu if you’re lacking specific minerals or vitamins, or you’re consuming too much sugar or salt, for example.

Organise tests, checks and assessments

Routine tests, screening checks and examinations are a simple but effective way to keep tabs on your health and ensure that any warning signs or unusual symptoms are spotted and addressed as early as possible. Booking a health assessment is a great way to find out more about your health and gather information about potential risks. You can also make use of services provided by your GP and local pharmacies, including blood pressure and BMI checks. It’s also important to acknowledge invitations for screening and age-related assessments and to keep up to date with dental, hearing and vision check-ups.

Make time for exercise

A lack of time is the most common excuse for a sedentary lifestyle. In the UK, over 30% of men and 40% of women don’t do enough exercise. Leading an active lifestyle is beneficial for mental and physical health. If you exercise regularly, you’ll reduce your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety, osteoporosis, dementia and some types of cancer. You should also notice a difference in your energy levels and you should feel good after a workout or a jog, walk or bike ride in the great outdoors. When you move your body, it releases endorphins, which are known as happy hormones. Higher levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain also cause a natural high. Make time for exercise. Even if you only have 30 minutes, you can work up a sweat and get fit. Go for a brisk walk or a run, go cycling, do an online workout at home or join a HIIT, spin, dance or yoga class.

Proactive Ways To Make Your Health A Priority

Many of us are too busy with work and parenting to find the time to prioritise health and well-being. If you’re eager to put more time and effort into your health, follow these steps. Plan a healthy menu, organise checks, tests and health assessments and make time for regular exercise.
