Coping With Your Past: Are You Using Alcohol as a Crutch?

September 3, 2023 in Living

The reality of alcoholism can hit hard when you’re in denial. A stressful world has consequences, and at times alcohol can seem like the temporary answer. But when you turn to alcohol to resolve problems, it creates other issues that are even harder to resolve.

A Discovery

When a troubled past becomes too much to bear, a crutch is used to get over the awful moments. When that crutch is alcohol, then it becomes time to seek alcohol inpatient rehab. The longer it takes you to get to this point, the more your personal health with suffer. Alcohol is often misunderstood as a substance since it can be dangerous in in differing quantities. There are many factors associated with its use, and this is where the veil of a denial is created.

Can You Go Without It?

A past relationship can be hard to get over. It causes pain whether it was a bad breakup, an unfair divorce or even cheating. No one is going to fault you for spending a few nights getting over it by indulging in food or alcohol. When the alcohol use becomes excessive to the point that you can set your watch by it, then it is a problem.

An abusive relationship is on a different level. After finally releasing yourself from that situation, the scars feel like they can be permanent. Alcohol feels like the best medicine in the world when you’re trying to forget. But imagine the difference in long-term thinking if alcohol was replaced with therapy. Instead of a liquid crutch that runs out at the bottom of the bottle, you’ll get a lifetime strength that can be called on every time you feel weak.

Losing Someone

It’s impossible to tell how someone will react to the death of a loved one. Some people withdraw, some people become overly social and others just disappear. This is probably one of the worst times to include alcohol as a crutch in your life. The pain of losing someone close is not something that goes away in a day, or even for a few months. By turning to alcohol to ‘forget’, you’re slowing the healing process and delaying a very important mental need. Moving on is part of any recovery, so when you use alcohol as a crutch then it becomes impossible to get over the pain of death.

Social Anxiety

There is an episode of a television show where a group of friends only like hanging out with a guy when he is under the influence. As absurd as that sounds, this type of behavior is common in real life. Alcohol should not be the only reason you can enjoy yourself socially. Whether it is low confidence or anxiety, never depend on alcohol to loosen up your personality. If you can only have fun while drinking, then there is big problem waiting to be pushed to the surface.

The Real Test

You will never get over your past by turning to alcohol. Using an addictive substance as a crutch is not a temporary, or a permanent answer. Gain a strong support system, and conquer your past demons the right way.
