How to create a relaxing environment in your home

October 31, 2023 in Living

My theme of the moment is how to relax and following on from my recent post about how I relax, it lead to me to think about how I would create a more relaxing environment at home. It is so important to create a relaxing environment in at least one part of your home where you can stop, relax and forget the craziness of the day.

Create a relaxing colour palette

Whether you are a fan of simplicity and neutral colours in your home or bright and bold, your choice of colours will have an impact on how relaxing your living space can be.

Whilst neutral colours; beiges, whites and soft greys are good as they don’t overstimulate the senses, if you want something more soothing, soft greens and blues are the best colours to use. With the natural influence of bodies of water, soft, pale blues are soothing and cooling and equally greens with their links to nature and the great outdoors can also be calming and either of these shades are perfect in rooms such as bedrooms and living rooms where you want to relax or sleep.

Create a calming outdoor space

Creating a calming outdoor space is just as important as making the inside of your home feel serene. Simple touches like soft lighting, potted plants, and cozy seating can instantly elevate your patio into a peaceful retreat. Choosing quality pieces such as rope patio furniture not only adds comfort but also brings a relaxed, natural vibe to your outdoor area — perfect for unwinding with a cup of tea or a good book at the end of a long day.

Bring in the plants

Research has shown that having plants in the house is beneficial for your mental well-being. With benefits such as improved mental health, reduced stress and anxiety levels and overall improvement to mood, why not bring the outdoors in and again let nature be your inspiration.

Not only are there health benefits, but this is also something that can be productive and with a number of different varieties of plants that can be grown or kept indoors, this is also something that will keep you busy.

Think about your lighting

When talking about a relaxing environment, lighting plays a crucial role, especially in the winter, when the nights draw in and we are forced to turn on  our harsh electric lights in the evenings.

However, there are so many gorgeous lighting options on offer to help create a more relaxing atmosphere. Whether you add some ambiance with some stylish fairy lights or create your indoor relaxation zone with battery lights or candles, there is something to suit every budget and taste at Lights4Fun.

Candles are also a great way of creating a relaxing environment and with so many scented candles on offer, you can also select a soothing scent to help you relax further.

Snuggle up with cushions and blankets

Comfortable and warm are two of my key requirements for relaxation and with rising fuel bills, blankets are a must to help us to relax during the winter months. Snuggling down on some nice cushions and beneath a blanket can help you to create a happy place, whatever you are doing.

Why not make the experience even better by adding in a heated blanket or cushion to help you not only relax and keep warm, but it will also help save a few pounds on your energy bills too?

Get rid of the clutter

This summer has been the summer of decluttering for me. It has been brutal at times, but it is so therapeutic.  I sort things into three piles; things that I could sell, things that I could donate and things to throw away and if things have been sat in the same place for longer than a few years, they need to go.  I keep a selection of important things and things to put in ‘memory boxes’ for the kiddos when they get older, but then everything else that is no longer needed has to go.

We tried to return our living room to an adult space.  With our youngest being a teenager, I felt that the shelves full of Lego models and toy boxes needed to be streamlined to try and create a clearer and clutter free space. Add in some plants and some nice pictures, it is starting to feel like the perfect space to unwind at the end of a stressful day at work.
