Moving house will always be a stressful experience. Even though you might also feel excitement about a fresh beginning, picking up your whole life – literally and figuratively – and moving it to another location will be overwhelming for most people.
Just like with other stressful experiences, knowing what to expect can make it all feel a bit more manageable. Today we decided to focus on moving day in particular, to help you know what you need to prepare for both practically and mentally.
Final checks
You’ll likely need to set an early alarm on the moving day, so that you can get prepared for what’s to come. Try to eat a big breakfast and put on some comfortable yet sturdy clothes, especially if you’ll be doing a lot of the lifting yourself.
Go around the house, and do all your final checks. Make sure that delicate boxes are marked ‘fragile’, that you’ve packed up everything that needs to be moved, and that any big bits of furniture that need to be taken to pieces are all ready to be moved.
The removers arrive
Next, your removals team – if you’ve (smartly) chosen to use one – from somewhere like Bright Movers will arrive at their allotted time. In most cases, this is when the pace will really pick up. They’ll start loading things up into their van, making sure that everything is safe and stable while it’s in transit.
The level of assistance that they provide will obviously be based on what you agreed upon before – make sure that you’ve communicated this clearly so that you get the help that you expect and need.
Travelling to the new place & unloading
Once everything is in the removals van, you’ll be ready to travel to the new location and start unloading everything. If you’re travelling separately to the removals team, make sure that they have the right address, that they know where to park and that you’ll be able to get there on time to let them in.
Try to label boxes so that you know exactly where in the house they should go. It’s much easier to unpack things correctly the first time than it is having to rearrange everything at a later date.
Unpacking and settling in
Finally, after a long and exhausting day, you’ll be ready to unpack some of your stuff and settle in. We definitely don’t recommend unpacking everything at once; it might be tempting, but remember how long it took you to pack it all up before you get started with such an ambitious project.
Instead, try to just unpack the things that will immediately make you comfortable – your favourite blanket, the TV, your bedding and any cups and plates you might need. Take a moment to relax, and congratulate yourselves on having gotten the job done.
Your moving day will inevitably end up being a big day, no matter how much you’re able to do beforehand to prepare yourself. By knowing what to expect and taking all preparatory measures possible, you should be able to set yourself up for success.
