New bed, can’t sleep

October 6, 2014 in Family, Family Life, Life

I loved my old bed.  I didn’t realise quite how much I loved it until it had gone.  It was a bit scruffy and tired looking.  It had a few unsightly stains on the mattress.  The head board looked like something out of an eighties sitcom.  But it was my bed and I loved it.

At the end of a long day when I was feeling tired and weary I would sink into it and nothing else mattered,  It was my lovely comfy old bed and I loved it.

Then vanity took hold.  I started flirting with the idea of something new, something springier, something fresh.  The idea was quite exciting.  After all the old bed was sagging a bit, a few of the springs were making themselves known and the zip down the middle of the mattress was just annoying.

I spent many happy hours on the internet staring lovingly at new beds and taking the opportunity of moving rooms over the summer, I decided on a new bed and with great excitement, I ordered it.

Therein started the sorry saga of the new bed.

I told my husband that the new bed had been ordered and mentioned that maybe at some point he could ring the council and arrange for the old one to be collected. Now, my husband is not usually very efficient.  Usually I ask him to do something and it takes several weeks and a few strong reminders.  Not this time.  Within hours, he had rung and was very smug that he had arranged for the bed to be picked up the following day.  In fact at 7 am the following day. The new bed wasn’t going to arrive until a week later.

So not only did we have the prospect of a week without a bed, but we then had to spend the night dismantling our old bed so that it would be ready to be picked up early the next day.

Marvellous.

Getting the old bed out was no mean feat either.

The old bed was a super kingsize divan and it had to be unscrewed, unzipped and carried down two flights of stairs.  At that point, I did not love my old bed at any more.

My husband set up our new bed, made up of two air beds and our bedding and I slept on the sofa.  I don’t do air beds.

I was not impressed.

The new bed arrived a week later and after a week on the sofa, I was so excited to build it and try it out.  New bed, new mattress, new duvet, new bed lined.  This was a real treat.  The bed was very smart.  It is smaller than the old bed as we decided that now that the little visitors during the night had stopped , we would be able to manage in a normal double bed.  Everyone tried it out and agreed that it was great.

there were three in the bed

First night and in I excitedly dived  under the new duvet and could I sleep? Not a chance.  I decided that this wasn’t really a problem as it was all new, it was a new room too so I was a little unsettled.

The next night, I couldn’t sleep.  There wasn’t enough space.  The duvet felt funny.  Every time I rolled over, my husband was there in my space.  It felt like I was in a single bed again.  I couldn’t get comfortable.

This carried on for several nights and I was getting more and more tired and irritable and so i sought solace on the sofa for a few nights.

We have had the bed now for a few weeks and I am still very unsettled.  There have been a few nights when I have been so exhausted that I have slept, but not for the whole night.  It is driving me crazy.

The children all love the bed and in fact the boys have slept in there a few times and they have slept like logs.  I am secretly quite pleased when they ask to sleep in our bed as it means that I can sleep in theirs and I know I will sleep.

sleeping

I still love my old bed.  I keep imagining it all lonely at a landfill somewhere and I feel quite sad.  I really hope that I will get used to the new bed soon as I am definitely a lot less patient at the moment on less sleep.

Maybe I will have to start looking for a new one?

Oh no! This is a complete nightmare, poor you. I hope you manage to adjust to it soon.
I desperately want a new mattress as I keep waking up with leg ache, but fear it could get worse if I change mattresses.

Oh Nikki, you have my every sympathy! I am very like this with new things and particularly where sleep is involved. I think perhaps we subconsciously know it’s different and then we get into a negative mindset about it. Poor you though, nothing worse than lack of sleep 🙁

We really need a new bed or at least a new mattress. It’s quite old and I find it uncomfortable, but there is the thing that the new one might turn out to be worse. Hope you settle with this one soon.

I have the same experience. I bought a new one a month ago not because I don’t like it anymore, but because it is totally broken and it really need for a replacement. I still love my old Uratex foam bed.

Four months on and I have got used to the new bed a little but I would still have my old bed back quite happily

I completely sympathise and I hope by now you’re finally at one with your new bed. I reluctantly parted with my old bed a year ago as my husband felt we needed a new one after 25 years. A year later and after having to take legal action with Vi Spring I’m still suffering poor sleep due to an uncomfortable bed. It seems as if what we order in the showroom when we try a bed out , can vary enormously in feel from what’s actually delivered! It’s been a complete misery and worse still, it’s seriously impacted my health. Like you, I grieve for my old bed. I would give anything to have it back. My advice would be to think VERY seriously before parting with a bed that you sleep well on. Only buy a new bed if it’s absolutely necessary and don’t assume paying thousands of pounds equals a good bed either! It doesn’t!

I know this is old BUTTTT I can’t sleep because of a new bed….HA! I figure even if no one ever reads this, I can’t sleep anyway and clearly have some time to kill. And I need to vent. I know the bed is of high quality and super comfy, but when I got in it for overnight sleep, I just couldn’t get comfortable. Maybe my body misses the sag in the old bed. Oh god please let this pass quickly.

It did take a few months but I can now sleep in the new bed, I think it is just habit and it takes a long while for your body to adapt. I hope you get some sleep soon
