Alongside sorting out a pension, making a will was one of those things that I thought only grown ups did. Even when I had O at 25, I still thought of it that way. It is one of those things that you know that you need to do but probably don’t prioritise. Then, if you’re anything like me, you wake up one day as a parent and realise that actually, it is something that you need to do as not only are you an adult, you have the responsibility of thinking about your children’s futures too.
We did make a will about four years ago and we were really pleased to have ticked that box and moved on. However, we then went on to have another baby and as we hadn’t added anything to that will to include any other children, we both knew that it was something that we really had to do.

It is true that I would, like most parents do anything and everything to protect my children and as much as I don’t want to think about anything happening to myself or my husband, you can’t predict what will happen in the future and this is one way of controlling it and also to make the process much easier if anything does happen.
The process itself was very simple. I contacted Maximum Inheritance Specialists by email and received a very quick response telling me that they would ring me to organise a time for the consultation. We organised a telephone consultation for the following week at a time when both my husband and I could talk and we then received an email confirming the appointment with some pointers to consider before the consultation.
The consultation itself took only 45 minutes, but it was really interesting. We thought that we knew it all having previously done a will, but we did not. It was very thorough and really made us think about things that we hadn’t previously; such as who would have the children if anything happened. We had always assumed that it would be grandparents, but we were advised that due to their age, we needed to choose someone younger, nearer our own age and that made a lot of sense. We also had to consider how our ‘estate’ would be split with the added complication of O being my son but not my husbands and I hadn’t even considered that my early pension from before I started teaching almost definitely would have my mother down as a beneficiary as I was only 18 when it started.

Within two days, we had received a ‘commentary’ copy of the will for us to check through the details and then a further short telephone conversation took place to make any corrections and to ask questions. Within three days the will was back with us ready to sign.
We now have our wills and we just need to get our signatures witnessed and that is it. Job done.
