When Tesco asked me to get involved in blogger challenge to get creative with some fruit and vegetables and create a garnish that would appeal to children, I thought that it sounded like great fun. There are lots of videos online that cover a whole range of different fruits and vegetables and some of the amazing things that they create are simply stunning.
It is such a great idea and I know from years of battling with children who are reluctant to eat vegetables in particular, anything that adds a bit of fun to proceedings can definitely help and I have been known to create pictures with my food to try and encourage the children to try something new.
So I have spent many hours online watching tutorial videos and I have found it fascinating how a little bit of creative cutting can produce flowers, birds, animals and a whole range of intricate looking shapes. So back to the challenge, the idea is that a group of bloggers create a garnish using fruit or vegetables to be in with a chance of winning a meal for two. Tesco are currently running a sticker promotion in store where you can collect a sticker for every £20 you spend online or in store and once you have collected five stickers, you can use them to save 70% off professional kitchenware items including a set of Thomas knives. We were sent a set of five Thomas knives along with a knife block to help us with the challenge.
A challenge it was indeed. It seems that creating cutting may look easy when you watch these people do it online, however, I am not gifted in the cutting department. This is something that I have learnt this week. I love cooking, I love baking and generally being creative in the kitchen is my thing. Creating beautiful garnish is not. However, we had great fun trying and it certainly kept the children entertained along the way as they laughed hysterically at my efforts and then asked me what it was supposed to be and then laughed some more.
The Thomas knives are amazing and although I may not be able to use them to chop my way to winning a meal, they are a real asset to the kitchen and I am very much enjoying having them handy for the more regular chopping and cutting jobs that I have to do on a daily basis.
So without any further ado, I give you my final efforts at creating garnish. I was working on a garden theme with flowers and butterflies;
The really good news though is that you have the chance to win your own set of Thomas kitchen knives courtesy of those lovely people at Tesco and you too can try your hand at chopping electorate garnish or anything else that you may desire. Simply fill in the Rafflecopter from below to be in with a chance.
Tesco are running a sticker promotion between 3rd March – 1st June 2014 where you can save up to 70% on exclusive kitchenware products at Tesco. For every £20 you spend online OR in-store you can collect a sticker, once you’ve collected five stickers you can use these to save up to 70% off professional kitchenware items. Please visit http://www.tesco.com/direct/thomas-kitchen/ for more details. We were sent a set of Thomas kitchen knives for the purpose of this competition. Any images and opinions are our own.
