So it was Father’s Day on Sunday and the disappointing England defeat the previous evening was still hanging in the air. L was very upset with the result and his mood wasn’t the best when he emerged from his duvet looking tired and grumpy. He was quite happy to give Daddy his present and home made card before returning to the sofa to watch even more football. I could see his mind ticking away and this is the conversation that followed;
“Mummy, you know that there is a Mother’s Day and a Father’s Day?”
“Yes.” (I knew what was coming)
“Well why isn’t there a children’s day?”
“Because children have special birthdays and Christmas and lots of other special days in between. This is your chance to say thank you to mums and dads for everything that they do for you.”
“That’s not fair. You have birthdays and Christmas too!”
“Yes we do but we don’t have such exciting days as you do.”
“That is childist!”
“No it isn’t, you really do get lots of treats.”
“I don’t care, it’s not fair, there should be a children’s day where you all say thank you to us for the things we do for you and show us some respect! I am going to campaign for one.” Sulky face.
His campaigning lasted all of about an hour whilst he moaned to his brother about how unfair it was. He seems to have forgotten about it for now though. Apparently in Japan, they do have a national holiday on 5th May to celebrate Children’s Day, but I haven’t mentioned that to L as it will start him off again.

Uh oh I’ve never heard of childism before. Do you think he might accept “everyday is children’s day”? 🙂

All kids go through the same phase, and in a way I guess they’re right, however every day is children’s day!
I remember my two asking the same a few years ago! They don’t realise how good they have it hey x
That made me laugh. My mum and dad used to say ‘because every day is a children’s day’ which is very true. I’m impressed that he kept his ‘campaigning’ up for as long as an hour – and that his brother put up with him moaning for that long!

1st June is International Children’s Day. We’ve had parades for it and everything when I was in school and I still get something for it every year 🙂
