When I was very young, I wanted to be a vet. I loved animals and that was the absolute and only thing that I was going to be. I would set up pretend animal hospitals in my room with all of my teddies and animal toys and spend many happy hours putting bandages on them, giving them pretend injections and making them better.
My dislike of blood and allergy to animal fur were mere obstacles to overcome.
As I grew older, my ideas changed. I had gone off creatures of the furry kind and I always had my head in a book; usually by Enid Blyton. So it was a natural progression then that career aspiration number two was to be a writer (something I am still hoping to be).
My teenage years passed by in a blur of make up and hormones, but I remember considering fashion design which always makes me smile due to both my lack of artistic ability and fashion sense.
Now I have a daughter of my own, I often wonder about what she will aspire to, being only four at the moment, I really have no clue as to which career path she will follow. She is very determined and strong-willed, always passionate about whatever she is doing, so I have a feeling that whatever she strives to do, she will succeed in. She makes me laugh a lot as she often tells me what she wants to be when she is grown up; usually a rock star, sometimes a fairy or a princess. I always smile and tell her that as long as she is happy, that is the main thing.
Blossom Magazine is a magazine for five to eight year olds and they are currently running a #IWantToBe campaign where they will be showing their readers a number of different aspirational careers to promote the idea that girls really can be whatever they want to be.
