When it comes to powerful female role models in the superhero world, it is sometimes hard to find inspiration. My daughter was recently invited to a party where she could dress up as a superhero or a princess. Amazingly, she wanted to take a break from her default princess costumes and go as a superhero. We scoured the internet for some inspiration and she started to get really cross as there seemed to be endless boy superhero toys and costumes and not so many for superhero girls.
I grew up watching Wonder Woman and so in the end I told her stories of Wonder Woman and feeling a little happier, that was the costume she chose. It would seem that we aren’t the only ones who have noticed this problem as Mattel have brought out a fabulous new range of toys; DC Superhero Girls. Based on a web-based animated series, Super Hero Girls where a the female Super Heroes and Super-Villains of the DC universe are at school and it explores their teen lives just before they discover their full super power potential.
A couple of months ago there was a one hour special called Super Hero High which was aired on Boomerang. My daughter loved it and watched it over and over, totally inspired by the female characters such as Super Girl, Wonder Woman, Batgirl and more.
The characters kept the main colours and looks of their male super hero counterparts but they were sassy, courageous and funny. I can see why it appealed to my daughter so much
Now Mattel have launched a new range of DC Superhero Girls range, including action figures, costumes, books and more to give super hero toys for girls to play with. They sent us a few things from the range to see what we thought.
I have talked before about my daughter’s incredible imagination. She loves toys and plays endlessly with figures and character from different ranges, often pulling them altogether to really bring her game to life. I find it fascinating to watch and straight away the new DC Superhero Girls Action Figures were in action ‘saving the day’.
The action figures are 6 inches high and come with their costume (which can’t be removed) ready for action. Molded in durable plastic, the figures are really detailed and my daughter said herself that they really look exactly like the character in the film. The arms and legs are movable and the characters come with either their weapon or accessory. Action figures are also available as 12 inch dolls.
For my daughter, they are perfect. She loves them already and is enjoying taking her imaginative play into a whole new world of Super Heroes and if we have another party to go to, she will have a lots characters to choose from.
