The Oregon Scientific Smart Globes are a really impressive range of educational globes. We reviewed a Smart Globe Discovery two years ago and two years on, my daughter still uses it regularly to find out more information about different countries.
The Smart Globe Myth is a brand new addition to the Smart Globe range from Oregon Scientific and again, I have been seriously impressed by the many things that this globe can do. The Smart Globe Myth is a 2-in-1 day and night globe. By day it is a globe which shows the countries, capital cities and oceans. At night, with the simple touch of a button, the globe transforms into an illuminated map of stars and planets. In addition, the Smart Globe Myth has three additional functions where it tells Zodiac Stories, Fairy Tales or Earth Facts.
If that wasn’t enough, you can download the Oregon Scientific Smart Globe App which allows you to unlock Augmented Reality content using your smartphone or tablet.
Setting up the Smart Globe Myth couldn’t be easier. Take it out of the box and turn it on and it is ready to use straight away as batteries are included. The globe itself is bright and colourful and immediately appealing to children. It is a great way to help teach your child about the geography of the world. My daughter loves learning the names of capital cities and we spent a long time looking at different countries and discovering new capital cities that we didn’t know before.
Using the different functions of the Smart Globe Myth are also really simple. An easy to use control panel on the base of the globe has an on/off switch, volume control, a button to control the brightness, a button for each of the three audio functions and a play/pause button. It is really easy for children to access and within seconds of the Smart Globe Myth being out of the box, we were listening to the Zodiac Stories. There are ten Fairy Tales; Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, The 3 little pigs, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Bears, Jack in the Beanstalk, The ugly duckling, The Princess and the pea and The Gingerbread Man.
Our favourite function has to be the illuminated map of the stars and planets. Once dark, you press the light button to adjust the brightness and you can see 88 constellations which are beautiful and fascinating. Children will love this and it could even be used as a nightlight.
The Augmented Reality also adds another level of fun. We quickly downloaded the app, you do have to register but this only takes a few minutes and then you are ready to access the AR. Using your phone or tablet, you can choose from a range of categories to explore.
Using the app, you can spot animals, landmarks, dinosaurs, weather facts and more. There is also extra fun to be had exploring flags, food and taking on fun challenges. My daughter loved the app. As she moved the phone around the globe, animals, dinosaurs and more suddenly appear as if they are walking across the globe and famous landmarks suddenly appear. It is very clever and a really engaging way to get children learning about our planet.
The Smart Globe Myth really is a smart globe. It is educational, stimulating and fun and with so many different features, kids will find it really interesting. We loved the illuminated map and my daughter enjoyed lying in the dark watching the globe and listening to one of the stories at the same time, it was certainly very relaxing. The augmented reality app is also a really great feature and one that I know my daughter will want to use a lot.
The Smart Globe Myth is powered by 3 AAA batteries which are included or by a USB cable which is also included in the box. The RRP is £39.99 and the free dedicated app is available on IOS or Google Play. The Smart Globe Myth is recommended for children aged 5+.
