Going on a long car journey can be gruelling. You may be concerned about getting lost or even not arriving at your destination on time. If you have kids in the back with you then they can make the situation even more stressful through being tired, bored, hungry or even irritable. If you want to avoid this, there are plenty of ways for you to keep them entertained while on the go.
Let them Create some Art
Children are very creative. They love to draw, so try and take a few crayons with you. Crayons are great because they won’t stain the seats in the same way as pens do. Pack them in a bag and give your kids a drawing pad in the car. This will keep them entertained for hours and they can even show you what they’ve made whenever you pull over to have a rest or even to stop for something to eat.
Fun Toys
There are plenty of car-friendly toys that you can take with you on your trip. If you aren’t sure what to take with you then focus on having toys that don’t have a lot of small parts. Action figures or even dolls are great. You can even put them in shoe boxes and decorate them so that they feel even more fun. When you do this, you’ll find that they don’t take up too much car space and the kids love it too.
Snacks
Long car journeys ultimately mean tired and hungry kids. If you want to get around this then try and give them some snacks to keep them entertained. Before you pack your snacks, you need to think about the nature of your travel. For example, cheese sandwiches aren’t good if you are travelling in the middle of summer. If you are stuck for ideas, it helps to take dried fruit, candy or even cereal bars. Water or juice is also a must-have. Fizzy drinks can give your kids an energy boost, so try and avoid this where possible.
Electronics
Portable electronic devices are great if you want to keep your kids entertained on the road. If you are stressed or anxious about driving to your destination, then it really does help to give your kids some headphones. This will stop you from getting distracted and it will also give them a more immersive experience. If you don’t have any electronics that are portable, then why not look into a cheap Nintendo switch?
Music
No road trip would be complete without music! Consider playing tracks that can be appreciated by the whole family. This could be pop or even rock. If you want to make the whole journey even more fun, then it helps to make a mix CD before you go. When you do, you will be able to get your kids involved and you can even ask them to create the cover as well. This is a great way for you to get them excited and it helps with their creativity.
