If there were one singular tried and tested method to quit smoking, that guaranteed results to every person at the first time of trying, everybody would be doing it. Clearly, that’s not the case. For some people, cutting all ties with smoking and staring the cravings square in the eye is the only way that they will ever kick the habit. For others, a more gradual and planned routine leading to an eventual last cigarette may be more suitable (for example, many people turn to vaping to aid the process – see cheap vape juice from 88vape). Some people choose to replace cigarette smoking with pipes, chewing tobacco or vape products from Vape Town. Sometimes, it’s trial and error as to what will work and what won’t – not every replacement therapy works for everyone, you see!
Today, we’re going to take a little bit of a closer look at some of the ways those who have gone before us have put into use when quitting smoking.
Tell people about it
Studies have shown that no matter what your goal in life, you are infinitely more likely to achieve whatever it is you set out to achieve if you tell people about your aims and check in with them regularly about your progress. Why? Guilt and obligation. That’s why. Nobody wants to make themselves look like they are all talk with very little follow through.
Friends and family can provide support. They can help to provide much needed means of distraction. And, by sharing your struggle, you won’t be carrying the weight of it alone. Try to be around friends who are not experiencing a stressful situation in their personal life, as the tension won’t help you to stay on course.
Get rid of all the evidence
Smokers live a life of smoke. They have ashtrays in every room. Their cars stink of smoke. There’s usually a plant pot or some kind of bin in the backyard, littered with cigarette butts. Lighters are found everywhere, too, in coat pockets and car doors. All of these reminders make it harder to quit.
That’s why you need to do a deep clean. For example, if you clean your car out and get rid of the smell, the temptation to light up on your commute will be significantly lessened – not only because the smell won’t be there as a reminder, but because you have invested time and money into making your car smell fresh, and you won’t want to undo all of that labour and expense.
Staying busy is more important than you might think
People think they are mentally tougher than they actually are. Don’t overestimate your ability to quit smoking. Instead, stay busy, because if you relax, your thoughts are more likely to be drawn towards old habits for comfort. Ride a bike. Write a blog. Plan and grow a garden. Follow the recipe in a cookbook. Rediscover an old hobby. Whatever it is, if you’re doing it, you won’t be smoking.
