5 Second Rule Spintensity Review and Giveaway

My mother in law bought us the original 5 Second Rule game a few years ago and it has been one of the most popular games we have ever had in this house.  We still play it regularly now as a family and I love that unlike some games, it is still great to play with everyone, even the reluctant teens.

I was very excited when I saw that there was a new 5 Second Rule game coming out this year: 5 Second Rule Spintensity.  And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.  However, I will tell you that like its name, there is a certain amount of intensity in this fast-paced game and it can all get just a little bit competitive.

Based on the original 5 Second Rule game where you have to come up with three things from a huge range of categories in five seconds, Spintensity has evolved from that and added in an electronic spinner which keeps the game going at a fast pace and also adds in some new features if you get your three things before the timer runs out.  Either name 3 more, 2 more, draw a new card or move on to the next player before the timer turn red and your time is up.

Setting up is easy.  Spintensity needs three AAA batteries and it is ready to go.  There are markers to show start and finish on the board around the spinner and you can choose how long you want to game to last.  Each player chooses a pawn and you all start on the start space. Press the button to get started but there is no time to lose, you need to be ready for your turn or you will be timed out before you start.

There are 200 double sided card questions which you place in the question box which helpfully has  ‘draw’ and ‘discard’ on either end so you don’t end up picking up the same question.  The spinner gives each player 5 seconds to read the question and then it flashes green to indicate your five seconds to give your three answers.

The categories are wide-ranging.  As we played, we had to give Snapchat filters, wild animals, things to help you sleep, things that melt just to name a few.  The recommended age is 12+ for the game but my daughter is 10 and she happily played along and there were lots of categories that she could quite happily have a go at.

Once you have successfully said your three things within the category you need to press the button again and it will give you the next instruction whether to name 2 or 3 more things within the original category, take another card or move the next player.  It all happens really quickly and so you all need to be concentrating as the next turn starts as soon as the spinner moves to next player.

Every time you manage to say three things within the 5 seconds, you keep the card.  The spinner will indicate the end of each round and each card that you have from that round equals the number of spaces you move on the board.  The winner is the first person to reach the finishing space.

We all had a go at 5 Second Rule Spintensity so that included two adults, two teenagers and a ten year old.  It moves very, very quickly and that is where the name comes from as it can be quite intense.  But we loved it. It is fun, we had such a laugh with some of the categories.  It took a couple of rounds before we understood how the spinner works and my son had to keep pressing the button for me as I kept forgetting.  But it is a brilliant game, very entertaining and I like the way you can control how long you want the game to last.

I thoroughly recommend this game for families, couples or small groups, it is super competitive and really entertaining and I have bought a couple to give to family friends this Christmas.  We will certainly be playing this game a lot over Christmas and New Year and I think it is set to be a new family favourite. With 400 question cards there are plenty of categories to choose from and they are so varied that they will appeal to kids and adults of all ages. I particularly love the fact that this is a game that teenagers enjoy as my two have to really enjoy a family game to play it these days.  5 Second Rule Spintensity certainly got the thumbs up from both of them and that is high praise indeed.
