How To Cut Down On Christmas Clutter

November 13, 2020 in Living

Okay, so I know it’s only November, but this is when we mothers have to start thinking about Christmas. Indeed, November begins our festive shopping and planning for December. Of course, getting to grips with the Christmas planning and shopping early on does come with its own set of problems. The most annoying thing is finding space in our house for food, gifts, wrapping paper, and decorations that aren’t needed until next month. The good news is that there are some tactics you can use to cut down on Christmas clutter while still staying organised for the festive period. Keep reading to find out what they are.

Choose the ‘something to’ method.

One of the best ways to cut down on Christmas clutter is to use the ‘something to’ method. The idea here is that instead of buying lots of cheap, novelty bits that are fun for a day or so that end up using valuable storage space (if your kids even get as far as putting them away), you focus on four main items. These are something to wear, something to read, something they want, and something they need.

Indeed this system can work well for anyone you need to buy for at Xmas. For example, if you have a younger daughter, the something to wear will be girl clothing, while the something to read could be a novel like Harry Potter or a magazine subscription. The something they need could be another item of clothes, some winter boots, or some tech that will help with school work, and the something they want can be left open for that special toy, game, or must-have item that they cannot do without.

Limit your Xmas decorations to one in and one out

The one in one out method is a great way of minimizing all sorts of clutter. However, it can work especially well when it comes to Xmas decorations. After all, it can be so easy to get carried away when we already have boxes in the loft chock full of the things!

Create a wrapping station

Now you may think that creating your very own station at home for wrapping gifts is a bit Monica from Friends and is taking things a step too far. However, hear me out, because it may just be the best thing you do all Xmas.

First of all, a wrapping station does not mean that you have to dedicate an entire room in your already crowded home to wrapping. Instead, all you will need is a metal shelf that hangs over a door.

Then it’s as simple as always keeping your papers, bows, tape, and scissors on that shelf, an example of which you can see here. The benefits are that your home is far less cluttered, and you will always know where the items you need are. Additionally, you will be able to see clearly, if you are running low on anything, which means you won’t buy a repeat of anything and so have a much better chance of keeping your home clutter-free this Christmas.
