What is Boss’s Day and How Do You Celebrate?

December 14, 2020 in Living

These days, there are countless of reasons to celebrate, with a national holiday on virtually every day of the calendar. Whether it’s mother’s day, pet’s day, or the day when we all celebrate pizza, you can spend the year with one party after another. One particular holiday that’s been gaining more attention in recent years is National Boss’s Day.

If you’ve never had the best relationship with your manager or supervisor, then you might not find celebrating “Boss’s” day to be a particularly appealing idea. However it could be an excellent way to show your appreciation if you’ve been blessed with the kind of mentor that really makes a positive difference in your life.

An Introduction to National Boss’s Day

Surprisingly for some, National Boss’s day isn’t just a random occurrence that appeared in the age of Instagram along with national selfie day. Patricia Bays Haroski actually registered this holiday in 1958, so it’s got a decent amount of history to it. Although the day officially began life in the US, with the US chamber of commerce, it’s quickly gained attention among other professionals all over the world. Many people in the UK now celebrate national boss’s day too.

Though this isn’t a true national holiday to the point where you can actually spend some much-needed time off work, National Boss’s day still has a lot of value to offer from a team-building perspective.

How to Celebrate National Boss’s Day

Since there are still a lot of employees out there that are celebrating national boss’s day for the first time, there are no hard and fast rules for how you should go about it. One option could be to start by choosing a great gift for your boss. We recommend being cautious when choosing presents for your boss, as it’s easy to get carried away and choose something “silly” if you have a friendly relationship with the people at work.

Remember that any gift you choose should be relevant to your boss’s interests, meaningful, and respectful. A product or item that highlights the role that your boss has played in your life could be a good choice. For instance, the “World’s Best Boss” mug is a bit outdated now, but you can experiment with “Best Boss” paper weights, cufflinks, and more.

If your boss is keen to get involved with this day, then you could always ask about spending a bit of time to celebrate during the lunch hour with some cake and coffee. You might even ask your boss and a group of staff members to get together at the end of the day for a happy hour celebration. Just be careful about how much you drink around the people responsible for your wages!

Making Your Boss Feel Appreciated

Aside from offering up great gifts and celebrating your boss with a bit of cake during lunch, there are plenty of other ways that you can celebrate national boss day too. For instance, why not chip in with your coworkers for something extra special, like having a string quartet come to play outside the office, or asking someone to make your boss a trophy that they can put on their desk and display to everyone who visits?

If you and your coworkers don’t have a lot of extra cash to splash in the winter months, you could look into more affordable ways of showing your boss what he or she means to you instead. Writing a card with a personal message about how your boss has helped you to grow and reach your professional goals could be an excellent way to make them feel really special on this important day. You could even have a group shout-out for your boss on social media, where all of your team members share their favourite things about working for this wonderful person.

Finally, think about how you can assist your boss in getting as much down on this day as possible. Maybe you and your team could all show up to work early to help out with extra paperwork. Perhaps you could stay back late and make sure that your boss gets home to his or her family on time for an evening instead.
