All parents want to be the best parents they can be for their children. You do all you can to give them what they need, love them, guide them, and provide them with a positive start in life so they can grow into happy adults who can live productive lives.
Of course, no parent is perfect, and you’ll always make mistakes, but as long as your heart is in the right place and you acknowledge those mistakes and move on from them, you’ll do a great job. Although if you practice bad habits, you’ll need to stop them as soon as you can; your children will look up to you, and they will want to do the things you do. So if they see you doing something, they’ll tend to copy, even if it’s bad for them. Here are some of the habits you won’t want to pass onto your children and therefore should stop as soon as you can for their sake, and your own.
Forgetting Self-Care
As a parent, it’s easy to forget about your own self-care when you’re looking after everyone else, but it’s not a good thing to do. By skipping your dentist appointment when you need to know whether dental implants are the right treatment for you, by postponing a visit to the doctor even if you’re feeling unwell and possibly have been for some time, by not taking some time for yourself to do the things you love to do, are you helping your children or showing them that self-care isn’t necessary?
It’s the latter. Making time for yourself either because you need a break or because you need some healthcare advice or for any other reason is crucial. It will show your children that it’s important to practice self-care and how to do it.
Smoking
No matter how hard you try to hide the fact that you smoke from your children, they will always know. And so will everyone else. The smell of cigarette smoke on your clothes and breath, the impact on your health, the way it makes your hair brittle and your teeth yellow are all very obvious. Or perhaps you don’t hide it at all, and you smoke in front of your kids. Neither is a good thing to do. Smoking in front of the kids while you’re telling them it’s a bad thing to do is confusing. Hiding your smoking proves that you know it’s no good.
Quitting cigarettes when you’re a parent is the best thing you can do. Not only will it give your children a good role model to follow, but it will keep you healthier, and you’ll be around longer for your children and be more active with them when they want to play.
Poor Financial Knowledge
When you’re an adult, you need to understand your finances. You’ll have to budget to ensure you can pay all your bills and have money left over (if possible). You’ll need to know when it’s a good time to borrow and when not to. You’ll need to understand how to save money instead of spending it so that you’re not stressed out by your finances all the time.
This can be a hard lesson to learn, but it’s one that’s worth doing, especially as you can pass on these good habits to your children who will be much better at handling money from an early age and not get into financial difficulties when they get older, all being well.
