I dream of Dolls Houses

November 21, 2012 in Living

One of my favourite toys, when I was a little girl, was my dolls house. It wasn’t the most expensive or luxurious dolls house, but I spent many happy hours playing with it, decorating it, making things to go in it.  So with those happy memories in mind, I decided that I would buy A a dolls house this year for Christmas.  I had a rough idea of what I wanted; something wooden and traditional looking.  Hopefully, something that would last and that maybe she would want to treasure and keep.

It began as a small seed of an idea to something that has snowballed into an obsession.  Who knew that there were so many options when it came to buying a dolls house and how expensive it could be.

It all started a few weeks ago when I visited a friend who has a daughter a few years older than A.  I mentioned to her that I was looking for a dolls house and she took me upstairs to show me they one they had.  It was one of those moments where the lights shone brighter and the angelic music played.  It was the most beautiful thing that I had ever seen.  I wanted it.  Simple.

I scurried home with the name Le Toy Van etched on my brain and started looking around at the different options.  And boy there are a lot of options.  There are lots of very beautiful Le Toy Van dolls houses and they are all really beautiful.  In addition, you can furnish your house and garden with a wide range of beautiful matching furniture and wooden dolls.  Perfect.  Except for the price.

My husband and I have said this year that we have to stick to a budget as the children all have so much anyway and always get spoilt rotten at Christmas.  Sadly, the dolls houses and accessories all exceeded that budget.  Back to the drawing board.

Except, I really want that dolls house.  I have spent hours over the last couple of weeks, scouring the Internet, looking at different options, prices, whether we could buy one second hand.  I have sought expert advice.  Have I come to any conclusion?  No. I did show my husband the dolls houses and he agreed that they were lovely until he saw the price and all of the colour drained from his face.  He suggested, whilst clutching his heart, that maybe I should look at some cheaper alternatives.

At 4:00 am this morning, I woke up in a cold sweat.  I had had some dolls house induced nightmare where I had accidentally ordered hundreds of dolls houses and they were all piled up in the hall and I couldn’t get out.

Maybe my subconscious is trying to tell me something?  Maybe I’ll get her a bike instead?

The one thing my daughter wants for Christmas this year is a dolls house but I have got myself into a real fizz about the whole thing

I have to admit that I never had a dolls house but always dreamed of having one. Unfortunately not having any girls means that I don’t get to do it! Nevermind.

Sounds like you need to take a break from the house searching… Maybe leaving it alone for a while will cause you to be inspired by something out of the blue – that’s usually how it works for me!

I love dolls houses but I think I’m going to buy Madam a playmobil type – however much I love classic ones she doesn’t show the same interest 🙁
My old headmistress was pretty wacky and collected expensive antique ones! xx
