Don’t ignore the head lice letter!

I was one of those mothers. I ignored the many letters that came home over the years telling us that there was another outbreak of head lice in the class. My children will never have nits, I thought. I had never had them in all my years and my children had clean, regularly washed hair, so why would I need to check.

When I say I never checked, I may have had a quick look, but nothing too extensive.

When I discovered that my son had them last year, I was mortified, I was even more mortified when I realised that he wasn’t the only one, we were all infested. It didn’t stop there. I naively thought that I could get rid of them really easily which wasn’t the case at all. In fact it took two weeks of treatments and twice daily combing to get rid of them.

A friend recommended a Vosene kids 3 in 1 conditioning shampoo and conditioning defence spray and they have been regulars in our house ever since.  We all use the 3 in 1 conditioning shampoo every time we wash our hair and the conditioning defence spray is particularly useful if you have an infestation as I spray it on before I comb through and it makes the process a lot easier.  Whilst I realise that using these products are a deterrent and won’t guarantee that my children will be head lice free forever, I am happy that by using them, they might be less likely and the adults too.

The Vosene website is a great resource for parents who are looking for more information about their products and there is a whole section about head lice.  They have even launched a Nitwatch map which is an interactive map showing places where parents can register concerns in their area or see hotspots marking places where there are lots of head lice concerns.

When we get the head lice letter or text message now, I am very keen to check all of the children thoroughly over the following days as I have no doubt that catching them early will help to get rid of them quickly and I make sure that I give them all a few extra sprays of the conditioning defence spray before they go to school.  There is definitely no more ignoring the nit letter in this house.
