A glimpse of the child

September 24, 2015 in Family, Parenting

An answer for everything, fiercely determined to always have the last word and far too clever for your own good but sometimes when you laugh at the silliest things, I catch a glimpse of the child you still are.

Everything about you is growing; confidence, legs, feet but you still fit perfectly into my arms when hugs are needed and wanted.

Communication is all too often too much eye rolling and tutting and you could win a gold medal in sighing but we still have good chats and I love the way you talk excitedly and so quickly that the words tumble out ten to the dozen, just like the smaller version of you used to.

Your smell is older now, shampoo, deodorant, hair gel just like the teen you are becoming but if I concentrate really hard, there is still a feint trace of that baby smell I miss so much.

You love your reflection and no matter how many times I find you looking at yourself, my opinion is still worth more than the mirror’s.

It is all about friends, what they like, how to impress them, fitting in, going out. Yet when you come back to me, you are happy, relaxed and you can be yourself.

You can’t wait to go out with friends, go to school, go on trips but when I see you, your eyes light up and that same grin greets me as it did way back when I picked you up at the end of nursery.

That slightly scarier than normal ride that you have been nagging to go on makes you hold my hand like the much younger version did. You say you are looking after me, but I know you better than you know yourself.

Tickles make you screw your face up and laugh out loud, reminding me just for a second of tickling the toddler you to distract you from tears and tantrums.

When you are hurt or poorly or upset, it’s mummy you need for comfort and reassurance. Once restored and I am back to being mum again.

The shape of your toes which are so bizarrely like mine, the point in your chin, how you stare when you’re annoyed, the hands on the hips, the shape of your nose, they show how much you are like me and these always have and will remain constantly with you.

However tall you become, however far you travel and wherever you are in life, I will always be able to catch a glimpse of the child you once were looking back at me.

What a beautiful post and so very true. My younger son used to actively reject affection, but over the last few months he has been purposely coming to me for hugs several times a day, no doubt as he adjusts to the changes in his life. And when he’s feeling sad or hurt or poorly, I go back to being mummy too!

Such a lovely post. I am starting to share much of this with my son now too. He is changing so much but when I’m tucking him up in bed he’s still my little boy who loves tickles and cuddles. Hope you’re well Hun. Xx
