Blue Peter was one of my favourites programs growing up. Admittedly, I grew up in a time when we had limited children’s TV but somehow, the programs I watched had more of an impact. I think that today’s kids have so much TV to choose from, probably too much, but that is a whole other blog post.
I loved BP. I loved the mix of makes, bakes, sport, animals and everything else. The makes were never quite as successful in my house as they were on TV but I still had great fun having a go and I would have loved a Blue Peter badge. Back then, they were like gold dust and I don’t think I knew anyone that had one.
Fast forward forty years and I finally do. My daughter. Fed up with mindless cartoons, I introduced my daughter to Blue Peter a few months ago telling her that she would love it. She wasn’t convinced but after a couple of episodes, she was hooked. Unlike the mindless cartoons, it is a program that is not only enjoyable but also makes her think a little and she was soon inspired to try and apply for a badge.
The website gives you information about applying and you can apply for a range of different badges according to your interests. She wanted a blue one and we had endless conversations about what she might do.
One day, it came to her. She loves music and she decided to write a song for Blue Peter. She plays the piano and has just started guitar lessons, so soon enough, she was sat at the piano with some blank music paper, composing a song.
Once she had her tune down, she wrote some Blue Peter inspired words and took to the computer to compose her letter of application. I was so proud of her and she was so excited when she posted the letter but it did say on the website that it might take up to 10 weeks to get a response. Time to wait.
The response came really quickly, within two weeks which was a lovely surprise. I knew what it was as soon as it came through the letterbox as I gave the envelope a little squeeze and I could feel the badge inside. I took it with me when I went to pick her up from school, giving it to her when she got in the car.
She gave a squeal as she opened the envelope as the badge appeared. She was so excited. The badge came with a very nice letter thanking her for taking the time to write to them and for composing the song. I was very impressed that they took the time to write such a lovely letter to her, a really nice touch considering how many applications they must receive.
She wore her Blue Peter badge with pride to school the next day and she is so proud of her achievement, it is great to see. The other bonus is that Blue Peter badge holders can get into lots of attractions for free throughout the UK. I hadn’t realised that but she is already busy compiling a list of places she wants to go this summer, so it looks like we will be busy.
