Making music out of bananas?
That was my question a few weeks ago when my daughter rushed down to tell me about an advert she had seen about a new product in the Project Mc2 range. She nodded furiously. “Yes, you can make music with wires, bananas and cat ears!” At that moment, I may have silently eye-rolled to myself but having reviewed one of the Project Mc2 dolls earlier this year, I knew that as crazy as that all might sound, it would be something which involved science and fun.
Project Mc2 is all about inspiring children to learn through play. Based on a Netflix series of the same name, the range Project Mc2 dolls are super cool and all come with their own science experiment.
So is Circuit Beats all about wires, bananas and cats ears? Absolutely. But it is all in the name of scientific fun and teaching children just how fun it can be to play and learn about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEAM)
The box contains a funky looking circuit board which contains a battery and this is your sound centre with 5 different sounds to choose from – piano, drums, guitar, cat meows or you can even record your own sounds which for extra fun. There are 7 brightly coloured wire clips which slot in easily into the circuit board and you can then clip them to the objects you want to play music on. Finally, there is a pair of cat ear speakers on a headband which are your speakers and they allow you to share your music with everyone.
It is very easy to set up and use. My daughter is 6 and she can easily use Circuit Beats. The idea is to create a circuit. Clip six of the wires to something that conducts electricity such as bananas, glasses of water, flowers or even ice cream and then clip the final wire to your finger and you have created an electrical circuit. When you tap on the objects with your other hand, you create a circular path for the electricity and that, in turn, makes a sound.
It is really clever. So you really can create musical bananas.
A has played with Circuit Beats a lot. She is fascinated by how it works and has had such great fun playing with it. We have talked about electricity and how a circuit works and it has sparked a real interest in the whole process. I love the idea behind Project Mc2, children learn so much through play and with Project Mc2, they can play, experiment and learn in a safe fun way.
